Default Hunger

I've just started taking Metformin 850mg Once a day (will increase to Twice a day in a week or so) but I've noticed that I'm hungry all the time. Is this normal?

I'm trying to stick to fresh fruit and veg when I can, but last night I as so hungry I ate a whole pizza to myself!! An hour or so later I then went Hypo (my own fault for eating the pizza I guess), so I had a cup of tea with sugar in it. Felt better but ever since then I've felt ravenous.

Also thinking about getting Blood glucose monitor. Do I need one?

Any advice is gratefully received

If your sugar is lowering, your brain will turn on the "hunger" signal to make sure it comes up. Just make sure you eat small meals every few hours that have protien balanced with carb in them that kieep you fuller and sugars stabler.

If you'd like to have a monitor, it never hurts...I know there are times when I'd like to have one on hand for curiousity.

I have been on met for a month and a half now and I have way bigger food cravings now than I did even when I was pregnant and those were HUGE cravings. I feel like I could live at the Chinese buffet in town and I've gained 10lbs since starting met. Everyone I talked to told me that things would get better and I should lose weight on met, but nope, not me. I've been trying to tell myself that it's just a craving and that I'm not really hungry but then I start getting things huge hunger pains, like a bottomless pit. It's INSANE! I go back to my Dr. next month, hopefully we'll see what's going on then. I can totally relate for right now though.

I have been the same way! When I was first put on 500mg of Met in February, it wasn't very bad at all, but since going up to 2500 about 6 weeks ago it has been horrible. I am trying to diet and watch what I am eating somewhat, since I should be losing weight, but it is so hard when I am STARVING all of the time. Of course, my endo was no help but simply suggested I get used to it, and that it was really just a good thing. Oh well.

I guess I just try to carry around a granola bar, string cheese, or some other snack so that if I get hungry I can eat and be satiated a little, so I don't overeat at the next meal. But, it's still pretty hard... I can definately sympathize.

im the same and i think its becase i ate bad carbs and lots of sugar i always had that to keep me going! now i cant do it on the met and its not good

i cooking a cook meal helps - such as rice, pulses, garlic and onion with spices makes a good healthy mean that really fills u up - also as its high in fibre it helps if u have tum upset with the met ...lol trust me!!

also drink a lot of water - it really helps fillu up or flavoured coffee - no cals and u dont need to add sugar if u get chocolate flavored ones!! xx

I've actually done OK on the food cravings end. But, I do like Christy suggested and eat small frequent meals. Typically, I eat something every three hours or so. I've also had very few side effects so far (I go up to 2000 mg on Tuesday so we'll see if it keeps up) and I really think what I've been eating has helped.
