Once again, I'm having trouble remembering if I've actually read stuff or if I just imagined it , so help me!
I seem to remember reading somewhere that sleep deprivation aggravates hyperinsulinemia. And did I also read that one of the symptoms of hyperinsulinemia is irratic behavior?
Any one know the answers or where I might have read this?

I don't remember reading anything about that, but it sounds possible. My friend (she has PCOS) is having trouble sleeping and also is having what I would think are some blood sugar issues. (Feeling shaky, dizzy, etc. until she has sugar, then feeling better for awhile, then back to shaky, etc. until she has more sugar). She too is wondering if they could be related. Good luck.

Symptoms of hyperinsulinemia include weight gain, cravings for sugar, intense hunger, weakness, need for frequent meals, poor concentration, emotional instability, memory loss, lack of focus, feelings of anxiety or panic, lack of motivation and fatigue. If, on the other hand, the condition leads to abnormally low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), symptoms may include sweating, weakness, slurred speech, confusion and seizures.
There has been recent research indicating that women with PCOS have a genetic defect in the pancreatic beta cells which cause them to secrete high levels of insulin (this is in addition to the insulin resistance).
A study found that people who do not get enough sleep on a regular basis may become less sensitive to insulin which, over time, can raise the risk of obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes. One of the reasons for this is that sleep deprivation causes increased levels of cortisone, which increase insulin resistance. Chronic sleep deprivation (under 6.5 hours per night) had the same effect on insulin resistance as aging.

Thanks Linda! I'd read that somewhere and I know that my health declined rapidly when I was seeing a 3rd shift police officer with whom I spent half the night on the phone - averaged 3 to 4 hours of sleep a night for about 6 weeks. I became paranoid and easily upset, felt like I was coming unglued basically. Needless to say, he ran away!
What I find interesting is that cortisol is important in the fight-or-flight reaction, correct? And if I'm remembering correctly (which is always questionable) cortisol is also a key player in those of us with anxiety/panic. So basically, when I don't sleep enough I'm setting off a series of reactions within my own body that cause it to get way out of control. Now let's find a way to explain that to my insomnia!!
