I am totally lost here...I have hypertension and have been taking Atenolol. My RE wanted me off the Atenolol and on to something safer for when I get pg. I saw my doc that I see for my hypertension and he weaned me off the Atenolol and placed me on Monopril...saying that it is safer for my ttc with my insulin issues than the Atenolol. Then, when I filled the Rx...the pharmicist and the info they print both said that when I get pg to STOP taking Monopril as it can cause serious problems with the fetus if taken for more than the first trimester. Does anyone know of a drug that is safe to take DURING pg? It seems that I am bust for both the Atenolol and Monopril. I will continue to take the Monopril while I am ttcing...as I don't O, I won't begin injectables until late September/early October. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Kristy,
Hello, I take Aldomet for my pg induced hypertension. To the best of my knowledge it is safe for both pg and breastfeeding. Aldomet is a really old bp med and you may have to fight with your DR. to get it. They like newer meds better. After I lost my daughter and my bp didn't go back to normal, they tried to make me take all kinds of different bp meds but I kept telling them that I planned to ttc as soon as possible and didn't see the point of them putting me on something to then have to pull me off and adjust me to something else? I won and have been on Aldomet for 2 years - it is controlling my bp wonderfully and thankfully is very inexpensive! HTH!

I've been on Adalat (a calcium channel blocker) and Procardia was my first for my pg induced hypertension with my son. Since ttc again, my RE said he wanted me to switch. So my primary care physician put me on Aldomet, too. My RE wanted me on an ace inhibitor or beta block, but these could cause birth defects and knowing that I am ttc, my pcp refused to put me on anything other than a calcium channel blocker.
According to my RE the calcium channel blockers sometimes attack the sperm, but my pcp said that doesn't seem to be the case with Aldomet.
My RE suggested Aldomet too...but when I asked my doc about it he turned his nose up at it saying that it was really old and that it has to be taken multiple times a day...and that one pill a day would be much easier to take. I just started the Monopril on Monday 7/15/02...I really hate to go to another doc behind his back because he is really nice...but he is not my primary doc either. My primary doc is also my OB/GYN who sent me to him for my hypertension (non pg induced...it runs in my family). Should I make an appt. with my PCP (Primary Care Physician) and ask for the Aldomet? I have been waiting so long to get pregnant I really don't want to jepordize it in any way. What would you suggest?

It is less convenient to take it twice a day, but thus far, my PCP and I are pleased with my bp. I've only been on it about two weeks. So she'll check me again in another two weeks. As long as the medicine keeps my pressure down and does not hamper my chances to conceive, I'm ok with it.
I definately think it is worth asking your OB/GYN about. You definately sound like you are in a situation that was similiar to mine. They wanted me to take all these bp meds that were NOT safe for pg! They kept saying "If you get pg, then we will switch you." I thought that was a bunch of baloney! I take my Aldomet 3xd and since I have to take the Met. 3xd anyways, it really isn't a problem. I agree with Shabach - Push for the Aldomet! It is the only one I am comfortable with that they have found no side effects with pg or breastfeeding.
HTH - Let us know how it turns out?

Thanks...I think I will go to my OB/GYN and ask for the Aldomet. I really don't want to be switching meds again. I really want to do what is best for my baby(ies) when ever I have them. I have been trying for so long that I don't want to jepordize them at all. Taking it more than once a day will be interesting since I only take my Gloucophage once a day...but that is fine with me. I will call my doc next week for appt. Thanks. I will let you all know how it goes.
