Hypo thyroid is where the thyroid gland is not making enough hormone. Hashimoto is an auto immune disease where the body's own antibodies fight the cells of the thyroid.

If you have any opportunity, do some research and work with your doctors, especially an endocronologist. Hashi disease can make you feel crappy even if your tsh levels are in the normal range.

I was dx with hypo thyroid in '97 and hashi in '06. I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in december of '06. There is a casual link between thyroid cancer and hashimoto disease. Some doctors will tell you that it is not true, but it is! It doesn't mean you will get thyroid cancer because you have hashi. But the link between the two should cause you to increase your awareness and work with your doctor.

Oh, another thing since hashimoto is an autoimmune disease, you should have the doctor check you for other autoimmune diseases.

My post is meant to increase awareness and not to alarm you. The majority of people with hashimoto go years or even forever without even knowing they have it!

Let me know if you have any questions - thanks

Hashi's is when your body attacks your thyroid, turning it into mush and causing it not to work properly. As michele said, it is a good idea to get checked for other autoimmune diseases, and it is very important that you stay on top of treating your thyroid disorder! Good luck, the Useful Thyroid Sites sticky has several links that will help you find more info.
