Default Hypothyroid and breastfeeding

Hello Ladies,
I have just got test results back and I am hypothyroid. I am currenlty breastfeeing my four month old son. Will I have to stop? I really don't want to but also want to feel better. I have felt so bad since I had my baby. I appreciate any feedback!
Thanks,
Tiffany

You definitely do not have to stop breastfeeding, unless your doctor tells you not to for some odd reason.... I am hypo, and breastfed both my kids. It's important, also, if you are postpartum, to get your levels checked at 3mos and 6 mos (and probably 3 mos after that, and so on...) postpartum because your levels can change because of hormonal changes.

And even if you doctor tells you to stop breastfeeding, I would contact LLL because Doc's often don't know what the heck they are talking about!

Also, LLL has connections where they can look up meds to see if they are contraindicated for baby, and if they pass through the milk.

Jyotsna, that's true, even if a doctor says not to, a LLL leader can double check. I actually contacted one when I started taking synthroid, and she told me since I was adding something that my body needed anyways, it wouldn't be a problem. But, you gotta do what you think best. Good luck with everything!
