Default Hypothyroid and Low BBT

I was diagnosed with PCOS about 2 years ago. I have started charting (TTC) and noticed that my basal body temperature is between 96.4 and 96.8. My thyroid bloodwork has come back normal, but I am concerned that the low body temp indicates hypothyroidism....

Has anyone else experienced the low temps but normal bloodwork?

TIA

Hi, sliz. Low basal body temperature can indicate low thyroid function. Have you noticed any other symptoms characteristic of hypothyroidism? Chances are, if you have hypothyroidism, your lab results will indicate that something is not quite right. Unfortunately, though, a lot of doctors still use old lab ranges and they often fail to recognize low thyroid function if your results do not fall within their old "normal" range. You might get some more replies and/or advice from this forum if you post your results. Good luck!

There is also something called Wilson's Temperature Syndrome. The web site is kind of bizarre, but if you can get past that, you might find some interesting ideas about what happens when the basal body temperature is low. The symptoms are similar to hypothyroid. And, I think it is treated similarly to hypothyroidism.

Unfortunately, if you go to a traditional doc, they will look at you funny. But, in the world of alternative medicine, you can find help for this. This has been my experience.

Best wishes to you on trying to make a baby!

Sliz, that seems to be a very low body temp. even for first thing in morning. If you haven't already, I'd see your dr. again for new blood tests. If you don't see an endocrinologist yet, ask for a referral, they usually can consider small changes in your numbers that a reg. dr. would brush off.

Hypothyroidism often shows itself slowly, but you shouldn't have to suffer months and years of feeling blah and cold before dr. decides, "You are hypothyroid." I remember feeling like maybe I was for a number of years, and I WAS tested regularly but just didn't make the cut those previous times.

I'm hypo and my temps are usually below 97 as well. I noticed when my TSH is more normal by temps are above 97.

My best friend ttc for 3 yrs with unexplained infertility. She thought it was hypothyroidism. After 3 doctors told her that her tests were normal, she was still sure that it was her thyroid. She had all of the symptoms, including low BBT. She told her third doctor (a RE) that she really believed it was her thyroid and he did further testing. Turns out that she was right. After he put her on meds for her thyroid, she got pregnant the next month.

After just reading these posts I am now even more convinced that I am hypothyroid. I have all the symptoms yet my blood tests came back 'normal' too and now I have started noting BBT for TTC I too have noticed that my temps are lower than average. Think I need to push for more tests... Do you think it's possible for a blood test to still say negative if I go back again if I am hypo?

My temp has always been low. It has always been around 97 and even now it stays lower than "normal".

Hello all,

I'm brand new. I actually just joined this site because this very thread came up on Google when I searched for "Regular low body temperature."

I've had 2 miscarriages, that is what woke me up to the fact that something is not right. Both were due to low progesterone levels they tell me. I've always had an irregular cycle. I had blood work done to test for Thyroid disorders after doing some reading about the symptoms and finding that nearly all of them apply. Test results came back normal but I got a referral to an endocrinologist anyway. He took lots of blood and told me "I believe your ovaries may be struggling, and your testosterone level is a bit high." He wants to do more blood work before we do anything and he asked me to start keeping a basal chart. I've always had a normal temperature of about 97.8. I was surprised at how low my temperature is in the mornings. My chart only goes down to 97 so I've had to draw my own notes at the bottom since I'm below 97 most of the time. Lowest temperature was this morning at 96.2. The more I read about my symptoms the more convinced I am that I am hypo.
