Question Hypothyroid and mood swings?

Hi everyone. went to an endocrinologist a couple of weeks ago because apparently my thyroid was "a little low". I don't have my latest results yet, I should have asked what "a little low" means....

For the past 10 years, I've been suffering what I thought was just wicked PMS, gained weight steadily, and have been so lazy it's not funny. I used to have a lot more energy. I thought it was just all part of having kids. LOL I've been diagnosed with mild depression twice and I notice that my moods are often up and down, really bizarre! Sometimes I think I'm losing it. I used to be a very laid back type, but over the last several years, I have become more negative, paranoid, and tempermental than I ever used to be. I wish I didn't feel like this as often as I do. I can't be very pleasant to live with when I'm at my worst.

What I'm wondering is if anyone else has had these symptoms with hypothyroidism. I've always chalked it up to really really bad PMS, but unless PMS lasts for 2-3 weeks at a time, I don't know if that's it.

Thyroid disease, even when mild, can worsen other conditions including PCOS. So the mood swings you're having could be due to your other hormones which are being affected by the low thyroid.

I've actually found that my mood swings are terrible. I haven't been the most compliant patient when it comes to taking my thyroid meds.. and there have been a few times when I've been off my meds for as long as 3 months. About 2 months in, I started feeling like my moods were all over the place.. and finally decided that for me, my thyroid meds were the equivalent to a bipolar taking her lithium.. if that makes any sense.

I am the same way...I was told I had PMDD - Pre Menstral Disphoric Disorder ...was given antidepressets...also was told "it's just depression", but I didn't have anything to be depressd about.

Anyway, I take 10 mg of Lexapro (for anxiety & panic attacks - started having them in my 20's) and it has been a life saver, hardly any mood swings anymore. I suspect it is related to my thyroid...

I am going round and round with Dr.'s to get on thyroid meds...

Good Luck.

My moods were one of the big reasons I started looking into whether or not I was sick. Every disorder related to PCOS and thyroid affect your hormones and therefore for your moods. If you have a good Dr, he can help you get everything under control. See my sig? That's the cocktail I have to take to feel "normal" :o But it's worth it.
