Default Hypothyroidism and low DHEA-S

Why do people with hypothyroidism typically have low DHEA-S? Does a low-normal DHEA-S level due to hypothyroidism typically return to normal ranges with T4 and/or T3 treatment? If so, how long does it take?

I have Hashimoto's hypothyroidism, for which I have been taking Synthroid for about 5 years now. I have never felt great on Synthroid alone; and, a 12-hour salivary cortisol test showed that my DHEA-S was low-normal for my age. After a few attempts on slightly higher dosages, I am finally tolerating 5mcg per day of Cytomel (along with my Synthroid), and I feel great, both mentally and physically! Will my DHEA-S return to normal as I continue to get my Free T3 levels at the top end of the scale?

Thank you!

This is a very interesting question! I'm interested in the replies you get.

I've just had 3 failed attempts at stims for IVF due to poor response. My FSH has always been good and according to my RE I'm still young. He said based on my response so far to meds though he suspects I have an issue with my ovarian reserve and he did a blood test to check my DHEA-S levels just last week. I've also suspected for a long time that I have hypothyroidism as I have quiet a few of the symptoms. I will be getting a referral in July to a new endo and will hopefully get some more answers. I had no idea there was any possible connections. I'm curious now what all my blood results come back to say.
