Hello Everyone! I have been diagnosised with PCOS and Hypothyroidism. My doctors put me on the generic med for the thyroidism. However my thyroid levels are still high. Is anyone else seeing problems on the generic meds? Also, once the meds for the thyroid work, should I be noticing a difference in anything physical. The doctor said I would feel any different but thought surely I would notice something. One last question. Does the thyroid condition effect the PCOS? Or are they two seperate things? Thanks for all your help sisters!
Hi Lucy,
I was just diagnosed with PCOS but I've had hypothyroidism for over 20 years - it was diagnosed at hashimotos thyroidism soon after because it seemed my levels were never right and there was a lot of fluctuation in the amount of synthroid I needed - when you have hashimotos disease your thyroid produces varying amounts of hormones, you can switch from hyper to hypo. There is a lot of good info on the net about it - the only reason I bring it up is because your levels are still high, just something to ask the doc about, especially if your thyroid is enlarged at all.
ps.. I never found a difference between generic and synthroid
Hope this helps at all
Sorry! I wanted to mention that my dry skin cleared up, hair stopped coming out, fingernails became stronger, and periods regulated when my thyroid finally leveled out - but then all these symptoms came back and that is when I was diagnosed with PCOS
I was having problems with my TSH flucuating, so I went to an endo who prescribed name brand synthroid. She said thyroid medicine is one of a few instances where generics are not as good as the name brand. I seem to be doing better with the name brand.
I Am Also Hypothyroid And Just Recently Dx With Pcos, After Taking My Synthroid And Got My Condition Under Control My Pcos Symptoms Got A Lot Worse... Now I'm Taking Metformin And This Seems To Be Helping Me With The Chronic Fatigue And Other Issues, Also My Endo Say That Is Better To Take The Brand Med Because The Amount Of Hormone On Each Pill Is More Consistent Than Generics, With Generic You Might Get Differnt Chemicals On Each Refill Depending On What The Pharmacy Is Giving You, The Brand Meds Use The Same Chemicals Every Time. The Chemicals That Are Used To Produce Your Thyroid Medicine Sometimes Might Give You Some Sort Of Allergie To Your Body. At Least That Is What My Endo Told Me.

I agree. Years ago when I was first put on synthroid I alternated between generic and brand based on what i could afford. looking back i notice a difference in my moods and stuff. I now only take name brand synthroid. my endo is a strong believe in the brand name synthroid rather than generics. try the brand name.
