Default hypothyroidism & pregnancy

Have any of you been pregnant and not have your thyroid under control completely? I just found out that I'm pregnant (5 weeks) and my doctor and I are still trying to get my hypothyroidism under control.
I am not sure where my level is at right now (I go on Monday to get it checked) but the last time I got it checked, my level was at 5.11. My original level (without medicine) is at 8.3 and with just one dose of medicine (Synthroid) daily it dropped to 5.11. I know that .3-4.5 is normal. I am hoping that my current level is between .3-4.5.

I would just like some advice/maybe comfort on the situation. I am afraid that I might miscarry because I have read that thyroid problems can cause miscarriage if they arent under control. However, I do know that sometimes a woman's thyroid medicine has to be adjusted when she is pregnant, so I am hoping that my fears about the situation wont last much longer.

From what I remember my doctor told me that I would be fine but I'm just curious if any of you have had gone through this first hand.

I am assuming that some people get pregnant and dont even know they have hypothyroidism, and then find out they do the same time they find out their pregnant. I am hoping that in general, it can be put under control quickly so that it can help prevent miscarriage.
I am also on Metformin so I am hoping that it is true that it can potentially prevent early miscarriage for some people..

Thanks in advance.

First of all, congrats!!

While it is very important to have your thyroid levels within range while you are pregnant try not to worry too much about it right now because that won't do you any good. You seem to be doing what you need to by having your levels checked and meds adjusted (if needed). Many women have to have their dosages adjusted several times during their pregnancies so make sure you have it checked on a regular basis. I've read that it is best to have your TSH around 1.0 during this time.

I don't have any first hand experience with this because I haven't been pregnant yet, but I've done research because hopefully that is in my not to distant future.

I would say if your doc isn't worried about it you should be ok. You're doing everything you can to get it under control and that's really all you can do. If you had your dose increased since your TSH was 5.11 it might actually be in range and you just don't know it. Good luck!

congratulations! My thyroid levels are usually below 1. When I first became pregnant they went up to 8.5. My endo adjusted my synthroid and a few weeks later it went to a 5 then a 3. The usual so tired you get during you first trimester was even worse, I had my thyroid checked every 6 weeks while preg and every 8 weeks when nursing. When nursing my levels were out of wack as well. Good luck to you!

Thanks for the experience. I am going through the same thing. Just started thyroid meds and am now pregnant. I'm worried it will cause a miscarriage. Just trying to stay stress free and let the doctor handle it.

Congrats to you! When I was dx with hypothyroid, I was also TTC. The TTC got resolved a bit faster than my thyroid dose, much like yourself. I got pg while still trying to get the correct dose of synthroid. I just wanted to give you support as I have a wonderful son who will be three in a few months. GL!

I had stopped taking metformin & synthroid completely. Fast forward later I found out I was 4 months pregnant! I had stopped taking them the month before I conceived. So I had gone for 5 months without. I got a royal chewing out by the Dr but she made sure my levels were good after that. It's hard to explain to people that it was normal for me to miss periods for even longer then that so I didn't even think could be pregnant when I was told I'd never be able to have children. If I'd have known I was going to get pregnant I'd have never stopped taking it in the first place.

My levels are being checked monthly- my thyroid levels were the cause of all 5 of my m/c because I was untreated for it.

So far things have gone well in this pregnancy so no worries if you're being treated. My DS made it through without treatment- so no medication doesn't necessarily mean you'll loose the baby either.

So far so good. Went for U/S today and while they did not find a sac they found the thickening of the lining that would indicate implantation and that all is going well.

Congrats! Id say you should be fine but make sure you don't just get off the meds if they are safe during preg.

Courtney: I would love to stay in touch with you through our pregancies as I am 5 months pregnant too. I got my TSH levels tested last Thursday and my doctor called me Monday and my TSH was 50, yes fifty. I have never had my TSH levels be so out of wack. She upped my Synthroid to 225 mcgs from 150 and added Cytomel 25 mcgs. I go back again in two weeks for more bloodwork. What has been bothersome to me is that when I called my OB they didn't seem concerned. There is a chance I could be carrying twins because I am 36 and because my husband's side of the family has a few sets. I would love to know now if I am carrying two but my OB wants to wait until March 26th. These next two weeks are going to be very long.
