I just went to a new endocrinologist on Friday who said that he suspects that I may have Hashimoto's. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism when I was 9 and no mention has ever been made of Hashimoto's. The only difference I can seem to find is that with Hashimoto's you can have a goiter. Is this true? I have never had a goiter but I have all the other symptoms. My thyroid has also never been really stable which he says is a little uncommon but not unheard of with Hashimoto's. Can anyone tell me the difference?
Thanks in advance.

Hashimoto's means your thyroid disease is autoimmune. That means your body is attacking your thyroid and killing it.
It is important to know if you have an autoimmune disease because if you have one, it can spread and you can develop others. Studies show people who have one are prone to developing others like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis etc.

In my case the Hashimoto's was discovered when a fine needle biopsy was done to rule out cancer....and it most certainly does elevate your chances of developing other auto-immune diseases. An excellent article for general information regarding Hashimoto's can be found at: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/e...cle/000371.htm For information on endocrinologists who are experienced in dealing with this disease you can go to: http://www.endocrineweb.com Best of luck to you!
