Default I am intersted in MET. How do I know if I need this medication?

Thanks for the info. I have some more questions though. My GYN diagnosed me but she did not check my glucose levels. I was diagnosed by ultrasound and symptoms like no periods or sporatic periods. I have been TTC for about 3 yrs and I do not have inferitlity insurance. My GYN put me on 50mg of CLomid with Provera. I am intersted in MET. How do I know if I need this medication? Should I be seeing some other type of doctor for the management of my PCOS? Thanks you for your responses.

Default I am also interested...

I was diagnosed the same way as you, and have not had blood work yet. I also am on Provera and Chlomid. My doctor mentioned MET, but didn't tell me I needed to take it, and said that it seems to work better with overwight women. But that post on here says differently, so I am unsure if I should try it. However, I hate taking medicine and don't want to take it if it is not worth it.

I have tried two rounds of Chlomid, 50 then 100mg and didn't ovulate either time. She suggested I try one more round at the highest dosage -150mg - and if that doesn't work she's going to send me to a specialist. I think that after you try chlomid for a few cycles (and some people try MET also) most GYN drs will recommend that you see a specialist for further treatment.

We've been TTC for a year, but I knew there was an issue before we even got married, because I was so irregular.

If this round doesn't work, I think I will wait to see if the specialist suggests MET, but I also am looking for answers.

Thanks for your response. If my GYN says that I need to see a specialist, who will that be an infertility clinic. If so my insurance doesnt cover this so I wonder how I would go about getting tested to see if I need Met. Also, I am not overweight, Im 5'2 and only weigh 105lbs. I have been trying to put weight on for almost 3 yrs now. Keep me updated with your situation and maybe togethter we can figure this out.

Jazzmyn,

Hi there:-) I dont know if I'll be any help but I thought I'd share my little story of being diagnosed...

I was going to an obgyn for a while and she ended up testing me for different things through bloodwork. My prog. was down, so she put me on 3 months of Clomid...nothing but aweful side effects for me. She sent me onto a fertility specialist & I am so happy I saw him! He did an u/s & that is how I was diagnosed w/ PCOS plus the fact that I have short luteal phases and painful periods. He put me on Glumetza (diff form of met) to start changing the hormone levels w/in my ovaries. I have been on it for a very short time, just started about 4 weeks ago. He is performing a lap, hsg, and ovarian diathermy next week as well. I was told that even though I am not overweight, the meds will help balance out the insulin levels and straighten out my hormones. When we looked at the u/s I about lost it b/c as he pointed out, you could see these black circles around each ovary connected which were the cysts. The obgyn did an u/s on me b/f she put me on Clomid & said I was fine, however, I obviously am not. I am not sure if obgyns will go as far into prescr. met. I think that is where the specialist come in. I could be wrong, but mine never brought it up. Hope this was helpful in some way:-) Best of luck to you.

Izzy-

This sounds exactly like the protocol that I am on. Would you mind telling me which doctor you are seeing?

Thank you,

Izzy's right. My Ob/Gyn was afraid to perscribe MET for me along with any other medications other than the pill. The pill I have come to find out has actually been shown to be harmful for PCOS sufferers. So with that being said, I have lost all faith in obies and I am sticking with specialists. I'll let them do my paps but that's about it!

can you elaborate on the pill being harmful for PCOS sufferers? i'm curious becuase i was diagnosed by my gyn after an u/s and she just put me on the pill without even mentioning any other treatment like met. the pill has worked over the last 2 months to regulate my cycles and clear up the acne (somewhat) but i have gotten a mysterious rash that i think may be caused by the pill (it appeared about 2 weeks after starting). i can treat it topically and it goes away but as soon as i stop the steriod cream it comes back. has anyone else had this response to the pill??? i had been on lo-ovral in the past and never responded this way to it but i am on yaz now and the rash is kind of freaking me out. help!

I have never heard of BC causing a rash. It's possible that the two are completely unrelated.

In my opinion, reversing your symptoms naturally is the best route. It's also the most challenging. I'm taking Metformin right now, a low dose of 500mg twice daily. I'm going to give it until the end of the year, and if I haven't seen a dramatic change in any of my symptoms I've decided that I'm going to stop taking medications altogether. After which I will continue to devote a substantial amount of time and energy into my workouts and organic foods and just deal with my symptoms- laser hair removal, topical acne treatments, etc.

As far as birth control hurting women with PCOS and women in general, there are countless articles and even books written on the topic. I do not think there is any hard evidence that BCP's "hurt" women in any way, but I believe that by altering what your body is trying to do naturally is hurtful.
