Default I am just speechless....

well, almost. Flabbergasted is more like it. Recently I have been watching these shows on the Discovery Health channel about morbidly obese people. One was on tonight called, "Tha Half Ton Man."
First, let me make it clear, I am obese myself, so I am not intending to "point and laugh". I am confused and curious mostly, but I must admit, I am a bit disgusted ,too.

First of all, these people cannot get out of the bed to walk around or even go to the bathroom (so, how DO they use the bathroom?!) yet, they are able to attain mass amounts of food everyday. One man said he eats 24 pork chops at a sitting. Where is he getting 24 cooked and served pork chops? If he can't work how does he afford them? My DH and I couldn't afford to eat 24 pork chops in a month much less at one meal!
So there must be other people getting this food for them. (None of the shows ever addressed this issue.) Wouldn't someone get to the point where you say, "This isn't good for you. You need to cut back." ? I understand these people have an unusual need for food. I understand it is a disease, but why would any one help them get to that point?

And again, how do these people go to the bathroom? bathe? shop ? Where do they get clothes? money? How do they pay their bills? How do they clean their houses? Take care of their children?

I am just so stunned at this.

I've often wondered if some people had an "enabler" in their lives that was helping them live such a lifestyle. It's sad really, isn't it?

My Uncle is extremely obese. I don't know exactly how much he weighs. I took him to the doctor for a colonoscopy and when they weighed him, I stepped back to give him privacy.

My Uncle has difficulty walking. He can probley only walk 10 or 15 feet at a time. He has severe sleep apnea, difficulty breathing. He also cannot stand for periods of time. His knees are shot. They want to replace them, but the doctors have told him that he needs to lose at least 200 lbs in order to do the surgery.

I think one of his problems is the volume of food that he does eat. When he says he is eating pancakes for breakfast, he eats like 10, with 3 or 4 egg and sausage.

I have talked to my Uncle about weight loss surgery and he feels that it is too extreme. I was like, you cannot walk! I love him so much and I am afraid that we are going to lose him soon.

He does shower himself. He has a big walk in shower. It takes him a long time because he can't move very fast at all. His toliet is also a really tall one. He uses a urinal at night.

His wife waits on him. She brings him food. He sits in the livingroom on a loveseat that is raised with 4x4's.

If anyone has any suggestions on how I can help him please let me know.

Rosie it must be so hard to have a loved one who is in this situation that you feel so helpless to assist them. But the fact that you care enough to WANT to help him is wonderful.

I don't really have any advice, it's such a difficult one. Is there some resource you can find online for information about morbidly obese people, or could you talk to your own doctor and ask advice?

One thing I do know is that lecturing him and trying to scare him with what all the weight is doing to his body is not going to help. I've never been that obese, but as an overweight person, nothing pushed me away from doing something about my weight more than people lecturing me or trying to scare me.

Hope you can find him some help soon.

I saw a show like that, but it was with infants and toddlers who were morbidly obese. In those cases all the blame WAS put on those feeding them since the toddlers couldn't buy food and cook of course.

I had a relative who kept gaining weight and his wife kept him supplied with food and cared for his needs when he was too heavy to do things for himself. She saw it as love and helping her husband. I think some people who supply alcoholics with alcohol go through the same thing. They see it as just getting for the person what they want. They don't see down the road at what a diet of mostly or only alcohol will do to a person.

i don't know--I wish I did. My grandma was very obese and she didn't get that way sitting around eating all day. She raised 7 kids and suckled all of them including 2 sets of twins. She worked the farm with my grand daddy and raised all the food they ate. She cooked 3 meals a day. She was a hard working woman. When she died, they had to buy a night gown and split it up the back, lie it on top of her and tuck it in around her because they couldn't find a dress big enough to bury her in.

My dad (her son) isn't big as a minute and neither is my mom, but all of us kids are overweight. My mom is 5ft tall and weighs 74 lbs!
