Unhappy I am a medication menace....

Hi -

After 3 really horrible months and hair loss that actually was not a symptom of PCOS but rather a side effect of being on Yasmin and Aldactone at once (big thanks to my wonderful gyno for that brilliant call) - I am off Yasmin. I just had too many bad side effects to type right now.

I know it helps a lot of women so I want to be clear that these were only my experiences.

I went back to Metformin and Aldactone. Here's my issue now. I just had my AF at the end of June on the normal Yasmin cycle. Now that I have been back on Met and Aldactone for a few days, it seems I have my AF again (or some heavy bleeding) for 3 days now.

Does anyone know if this would be normal for coming off BCP or going back on Met?

Man - my body doesn't know what is going on.

Can I ask how you know this? Did your doctor tell you this?

The reason I ask is because I've been on Mircette and Spiro since February. I had actually stopped taking both of them in December and had the worst shedding of my life from January to April. My shedding has finally come back to normal amounts but the frontal part of my hair looks worse than a few months ago!

I'm not sure if I should stop the pill and spiro or maybe just one or keep going with it.

Has your hair loss gotten better? Hair loss is my big PCOS problem. I can deal with anything but this hair loss crap.

Thanks

You know - instinctively, I knew the hair loss I had was the Yasmin. This is simply because I had never experienced that symptom (I had the facial hair issue). It started falling out a few weeks after I went on the Yasmin.

To tell you the truth, I had to keep circling around between my gyno, endo and general doctor before anyone gave me answers that made sense.

Finally, my endo explained to me that Aldactone (spiro) and Yasmin both had the same diuretic ingredient that works to slow hair growth (again, meant for the facial hair). She thought that the two, working together, may have effected the hair on my head.

I want to be clear - we don't know if this is absolutely the case yet. What I will tell you (and I am knocking on wood and crossing my fingers now) is that I do see small hairs coming back, even in the last week since I stopped the Yasmin and lowered my dosage of Adlactone.

I totally understand the hair thing - it is pretty terrifying and makes you feel terrible overall. My best advice to you (from someone still finding answers herself) is to keep reading, keep bugging your doctors about your medications and trust your own instincts. Doctors are still learning about PCOS - not all treatments they prescripbe will work for everyone. Listen to your body and speak up.

I totally believe in instincts!

The thing is my hair loss was common when I was first diagnosed without taking any meds.

I've lost 50 lbs and the hair loss has just gotten thinner and thinner.

But my hair loss shedding was so horrific after the first time I went off BCPs that I knew I had to get back on it, even though I didn't want to, but had to for my mental stability. I was back on spiro for a full month and saw no change but once I was back on the BCP, it started to slow down the hair loss.

My desire is to get off meds completely!

You think that the combo of spiro and BCP affected your hair loss and you chose to get off the BCP. For me, I want to do the opposite because I know the BCP helped stop the loss.

Of course, my periods are so screwed up now because of the spiro. I'm hoping that this month it'll finally be normal and if it's not, I'm going to ask to lessen the spiro or get off it.

Anyway, I hope you have good results! Please keep me informed!
