Hi Ladies,
My name is Amanda and I was diagnosed with PCOS in November of 2007. I also have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. I am on .088mg Synthroid, and I just got a script for metformin today. My Endocrinologist gave me 500mg - twice a day. I will start that tomorrow.
Here is my story:
Well, Chris and I were married on June 19, 2004. We started to TTC in April of 2007. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in August of 2004.
We went to my gynocologist in March for a preconception appointment. He took some history and told us that if we were not pregnant by October - to come back and see him. I went off of the patch - we started using condoms, then that quickly went out the window. I started charting and temping. My first cycle was 58 days.
My second cycle was 86 days. At this time I was going through a stressful siutation at work (I teach Kindergarten) - planning Kindergarten Graduation with no help from my partner teacher and wrapping up the school year. The day after Kindergarten graduation I got my period. I went to my summer job at the park district. I do not have a stressful job during the summer - I work as the recreation secretary. I really enjoy it - because I love the people I work with and my job is quiet. I went to my gynocologist for my annual exam and we talked about my cycles - he chalked it up to going off of birth control - which I was alright with. I had to go and get my thyroid checked in July. My levels came back and it was still out of whack. I went for my follow up appt. My primary care doctor said that my levels were not "that high" and we would watch and see if it became a problem. I asked him if I should refill my Synthroid and he looked at me funny. Then he said, "well, who put you on that?" I said, "You did." He said, "How long have you been on it?" I said, "for about 3 years now." He said, "Ohh, well then we will just up your dose." Needless to say, I don't go to him anymore. I called my gynocologist on day 60 of my cycle - they told me not to worry - and to call back if it went to 90 days but they wanted to see me for bloodwork. My testosterone came back high and my thyroid was still out of whack. I was referred to an endocrinologist. School started again in August. My partner teacher was driving me seriously insane. I finally got my period after a few days of school starting again.
My third cycle was 38 days. I went to the endocrinologist. He rechecked everything, we did a thyroid ultrasound to check for abnormalities - things came back fine but my medication was not strong enough. So he upped it. I was also ordered to have a pelvic ultrasound to check for PCOS. At the ultrasound, the tech. was so super nice. She walked me through everything and told me that she had problems conceiving - and now she has twins. She made me feel better. The results came back - I had a cyst. They told me that when I started my next cycle, when my period was done to go back and get another ultrasound - the cyst was gone. I can't believe how much those those things hurt!
My fourth cycle is in progress. Chris and I went back to my gynocologist at the end of October. He went over some test results with us, like the latest ultrasound, and then he asked us if we would mind a referral to a reproductive endocrinologist. He gave us three and then said, " I will see you when you are pregnant."
We went to see the RE on November 7th. I was very nervous - just not knowng what to expect - but he was very nice. He did a pelvic ultrasound and said that I have mild PCOS. He wants to start with my next cycle on Clomid days 5-9, then an ultrasound before ovulation, then a trigger shot, then we will do an IUI.
