I am really happy this place exists. I have so many questions and am so confused. I have looked on the internet about PCOS however I keep finding conflicting information.
Here is my story sorry it is a bit long and out of order. I am honestly feeling increasingly distraught and my mind seems to only be half way working today(can clomid cause emotional side effects).
I am 28 years old and my partner and I have decided to have a baby. We have always wanted one, but we wanted and needed to be more financially stable. We are trying our first time this month.
I had struggled for year with an eating disorder when I was 12 to 14 and 18 to 20( I have been both anorexic and bulimic) I got very ill when I was 20 I started having heart problems, I started fainting a lot, and my periods started messing up. Sometimes they are a few days late and sometimes they are two or more weeks late but I always have one.
I started my period when I was nine it lasted a few months then stopped until I was 11. They were mildly painful as a child but by the time I was 15 I was in so much pain I would be lying in bed doubled over in pain crying and often screaming. My mother took me to see my first obgyn and he said I had some condition and basically my body was having contractions as bad as if I were in labor. I have in the last two years only had one that was that bad the others are well controlled with Advil.
My period would normally be 5 days with 3 days of very heavy flow. However in the last year it has started getting less and less with 4 days being my norm and two days of very heavy flow. I never had light flow it was very heavy or medium but never light . Now in the last few months it has been 3 or 4 days, I have one really heavy, one or 2 medium, and one light. This last one I just had lasted 3 days my first day was light my second day was medium and my third day was almost not even there.
I have hypothyroidism and an empty sella. Both of witch cause problems with my hormones.
I had a pap done in June and was told every thing was fine. (can they see cysts in a pap?)
I have been trying to lose weight for two years now. I was only able to lose 10 pounds in 9 months working out and eating right. I cut out all sweets(other then fruit, yogurt, and sugar free pudding).I also stopped eating high fat or high carb foods. Still nothing.
About a year and a half ago I started having odd problems with my blood sugar ( I had always had low blood sugar).I would eat any carbs and my blood sugar would immediately skyrocket however with in 15 to 20 minutes it would have dropped again. This is always accompanied by symptoms of both.
My A1C stays around 5.7 to 5.9 but never goes to 6. My Doctor talked to a diabetes specialist and she said it was not normal diabetes but it was something so he put me on metformin. I only took it if I was going to eat carbs witch is rarely. So until a month ago I never took it regularly. I do now.
I also have strange hair growth on my knuckles, toes and very lightly on my stomach …It started when I was 20 I think. I shave though. I also have very large breasts (I was a DD at the age of 12). I have always assumed this meant I had a lot of estrogen or something. Not sure if PCOS has anything to do with that. Oh and I am 28 and still have mild to moderate acne.
I have these light brown patches on my neck and a few years ago they showed up. I went to a doctor and he was unsure of what it could be then he asked another doctor to look and he had no idea. I have eczema so I asked if it could be a strange outbreak thy said no. They both decided it must be this non contagious skin fungus that makes light patches on people…however I am so light that they look dark. I never bought this theory however I tried the fungus cream anyway. Nothing happened. It has come and gone a few times over the years. Today I noticed it was back.
I read something about pcos and some insulin problem causing something that sounds and looks like what I have…well the mild cases look like what I have and it feels strange to touch as well.
I was just told a month ago I had pcos. I am trying to understand what this means and how to do all I can so I can be healthy and so I can have a baby.
I just had my hormones checked last month and they where all ok however I did ovulate last month so the obgyn says that is normal. He says the month I don’t ovulate the hormones will be off. I have done ovulation kits for the last 4 months and three out of the four I did not ovulate. Also my cholesterol is really good it was 165.
I have never been told I have cysts(actually at my last papa I was told I was fine) then a moth ago even though he did not do an ultrasound he says I have PCOS. I read some women can have PCOS without any actual cysts is that true?
After he told me I had Pcos he pretty much said I could still get pregnant as long as I took clomid (I am on 50 mg day 3-10). He then got up and left. He did not tell me anything about it. I tried to ask him about it but he was up and out the door so fast. My GP tried to explain to me what he could but this is not his field and he only knows a little.
Both my GP and I have been trying to do all we can to get me ready to get pregnant and the obgyn jumped on board right away but I am very worried. I feel like my body is falling apart. I feel like I don’t know what is happening to me.
I guess I am looking for others who understand. Who have been here and have tips and ideas and who know what needs to be done because noone else is giving me any help.
Sorry if this is hard to read. I am normally better at writing.
Welcome! I'm sorry that you had such a confusing experience. It's awfully daunting to get a diagnosis and not really understand, so I do encourage you to just call your OB/GYN and make an appointment to go over your questions.
It's good that you are getting started with treatment and hopefully you won't have to suffer too long TTC. It can be very stressful and agonizingly disappointing, but we all hope that in the end we can have something for our troubles.
Feel free to message me with specific questions. I was also quite concerned with a strange diagnosis, but for me, it's all doable. Not fun but doable.
By the way, a pap smear collects tissue to check for cancer. You can't see anything then. In the ultrasound, you can see cysts. Very likely your OB/GYN saw cysts but failed to explain that properly.
I thank you both. Actually he never did an ultrasound. Thats why I was confused as to how he knew I had PCOS but he said cysts or no cysts al the symptoms where there and that was what it was.
Is he right could it be PCOS without cysts and should I ask him to do an ultrasound to see if I have them. If I do and I get pregnant will they hurt the baby?
Cysts are just eggs that matured and didn't release to cause ovulation. They release hormones, which is what most people think is responsible for the hormone imbalance. In any case, the cysts themselves don't harm the baby. It's possible that a hormone imbalance makes it more difficult to keep a pregnancy going, but evidence on that is hard to come by. Lots of PCOS'ers have children.
If you would like confirmation, ask for an ultrasound. Honestly, if you are going to TTC with clomid, you'll probably get ultrasounds during treatment anyways. Go with your feeling, and if you're not happy, find a new doctor.
