I was diagnosed with PCOS in March 2006. I am just now starting to get treatment. I recently moved so there was a delay in getting medical attention. I've got excess hair, high b/p, depression, anxiety, increased weight gain, no energy, high testosterone, I haven't had a period since 2004, etc.
My new doctor put me on Met 500mg to start with and he said that this will make me ovulate. It is making my ill but I will work through that.
I am also taking Micronor bcp's as apparently they have more progesterone in them. I have been on these since Nov. 2005 and I don't feel liike they are working.
I recently started seeing a consellor because of my depression and anxiety. It was a difficult decision but after meeting with her I feel better.
I do have some questions for you all:
1. What are you doing about the increased hair (expecially on the face). I've been waxing and it seems like it grows back much faster. I have heard that there is a medication that can be taken for excess hair...are any of you on it and what it is called, I want to ask my doctor.
2. My husband and I do not want children. Are there any of you in the same situation? It seems like a lot of women on here are trying to get pregnant....not me. I am wondering if I were to get a hysterectomy, would that help me? I am only 29 so I think that seems severe but I know that I don't want kids....I have 2 dogs and I am so happy with the life we have now.....
3. I am also getting tested for hypothyroid...any one else dealing with this? What are you and your doctor doing about that?
Thanks, ladies

I can't really help you with the excess hair or thyroid-- there is a thread on this site that may give you more info on the hair. I believe they also have thyroid discussions in the same area...it is very common to be tested for both to ensure you do have PCOS.
On the subject of a hysterectomy, I'm not sure if that helps or not. It may actually worsen because then you'd have to have hormone replacement therapy and every doctor I've spoken to (I also wanted a hysterectomy at that age just to get rid of the terrible pain each month) said no. Many people with PCOS don't have ovarian cysts so I would think the a hysterectomy would not relieve all of your symptoms. I know there are a lot of knowledgeable folks on the board that could tell you why that is...

is now an AVATAR!!
I just wanted to pop in and give you a warm welcome to SC!
I may not have the answers that you are looking for but there is bound to be someone here who can help!
good Luck!
It's great that you're seeing a counselor. It's hard to do, you're very courageous. I'm so glad it's helping.
Hope the met works well for you. For me the side effects got better when I took it right in the middle of my meal and lowered my carbs. You're starting at 500 mg, that's what I did, and it helped too.
This is just my opinion, but I took Micronor (only during breastfeeding) and I HATED it. I felt so messed up, I was bleeding most of the time I was on it. There are some types of BCP that are more "PCOS-friendly". You can ask over at the BCP forum if you're interested.
Hypothyroid is common in women w/ PCOS. (There's a forum here for that too)! I don't have it but I do get tested for it regularly, along with my PCOS checkups.
Hope this helps,
Hugs
Jenny

I also have excess facial hair where I was shaving 2x per day, but I have a friend who does lazer hair removal. I helps soooooo much. Once the hairs fall out, I can go about a month or a little over a month with no hair on my face. It will not work permanantly until you get whatever the problem is straightened out but like I said, It has helped me greatly. I don't have to shave at all in between treatments unless I go more than 5 weeks between them.
This can be a bit on the expensive side but for me,,,it is worth every penny.
personally im lucky on the facial har bit it is fair (but a lot of it) im bad sometimes a shave it as a quick fix but i pluck! (recommend pain killers b4 though)
i have heard that having a hyst' does not get rid of the problems all the time and can make it worse depending on what exactly have taken ur dr to dx pcos! i think u really should consider other options hon first! (i think many ppl on here talk about ttc becase they find out they have pcos after problems in getting preg thats the only reason )
hypothyroid i have not been tested for but im sure that someone on here will be able to help hon xx xxx xx oh and welcome
beky xx
