Default i am so confused...

I am 24 and since I was 14 I have had irregular periods (as few as 4-5 per year) and over the past few years I have increased hair growth on my sideburns, right down past the earlobes and under my chin, I can't get my weight much below 200 lbs, no matter how hard I try(I am 5'6", technically obese). For the past 6-8 months, my ovaries hurt almost every day. I think I am IR as well. So after years of putting it off, I went to the Dr. yesterday, and pretty much just cried and said I don't want a beard like the lady at my work. He sent me for bloodwork yesterday and an ultrasound today. He didn't ask me any questions at all really, not even when my last period was or anything like that. The receptionist called today to say my bloodwork is normal. I get the ultrasound results in a couple days. I don't understand why I am 24 and am growing a beard if my hormones are normal. Has anyone else been told their hormones are fine and had PCOS? Should I make them send me to a specialist? I am scared the doctors are going to tell me there is nothing wrong with me.

Hi Susan,

I'm sorry you didn't get the answers you need from your Dr. I think many of us here have had that experience too.

One thing that is recommended is to get copies of all of your results. I had my bloodwork done last month. At my last Dr appointment, I was told my results were 'normal' too. When I compared them to the information on this site (I think it was in the newbie roadmap section) I saw that they were all off in the same ways described in that section - ie Testosterone high, but not alarmingly high, LDL cholesterol high, fasting insulin levels high, etc. Don't rely on your Dr only for this, you are your best advocate.

I went into my appointment letting my Dr know that my biggest worry was having my concerns discounted. She heard me but didn't feel certain enough to make a diagnosis. I've been referred to an endo. I KNOW there is something wrong. You do too. Don't let someone tell you this is normal if you are certain it isn't.

4Sunshine is absolutely right...I always say to you it's your life and your health care...to them it is simply medical practice...

Sometimes you have to change Dr's too...don't be afraid to do it, if you have to...

Best of luck to both of you...

There are things that an endocrinologist can see that a pcp or gp will look past. You may have a hormonal imbalance which shows up as "within normal range" but may still high enough for it to be affecting your body. My testosterone levels are normal, but I still have acne! Because it's still too high for my body, so I need meds to help lower it. Absolutely go see an endocrinologist. Good luck

Ok, Im not in your particular situation but my tests were normal too, high end of normal. Everywhere seems to have a different definition of normal. And it depends on your particular sensitivity as well. And how the hormone amounts ratio to each other. Where I live if your testosterone is over 1.67 then your out of the normal range. The doctor said mine was normal, Im nosey so I looked at my chart before he entered my room. Mine were 1.76. Not a big deal right? Well it was to me! When I asked him about it he said it was so close to normal that it doesnt matter. Well to my body it mattered. I dont know if I am making sense at all. So my doctor told me I was normal too. Then I kept switching Drs and Gyns and Endos until I found one who listened For me going on spiro and met helped so much, especially spiro with the hair growth thing!

Thanks a lot everyone. I am very relieved. I was starting to think I was overreacting, but obviously everything is not right and I will make sure I find out what my actual levels are next time I see my doctor.
