I am so lost I need some help before I do serious damage....
I am at a loss. I have PCOS. I have managed to lose a good amount of weight but it's slow going. I am doing this all natural. I have 30 more lbs to go and no period.
My doc says my thyroid levels are normal. Lower blood sugar did not induce my period or cause significant weight loss when on metformin. I have most every sympton of hypothyroid with normal results.
He decided to give me a small dose of nature thyroid. I am scared. I feel spacey. I just want relief. I was trying Iodine but my reactions on iodoral were so extreme - tired, depressed, etc - i could only take 6mg every other day which I am currently doing ok with.
I do not know if I should stop this medicine immediately before I jack my thyroid up forever ( i am only on day 2) and go back to iodine or if i should stick this out as there are quite a few women who had normal thyroid results but still had thyroid issues.
I dont know what to do. Please help.
Thank you,
Rebeca

How much natural thyroid did he prescribe for you?
My totally unprofessional opinion is that you should stop the iodine and stick with the natural thyroid for at least a month. Depending on how much he prescribed for you, try splitting the dose up and ramping up to what he prescribed. Do you know if he tested *free* T3 and *free* T4, or total T3 and T4?
Thanks, he did both Free T3 and T4 and the numbers are posted above. The thing is, when I was doing the iodine with kelp I had energy, no side effects saw weight loss and felt some things going on in my otherwise dormant ovaries. Iodine I can go back to my normal thyroid levels with hormone I hear how you have to take it for life and just feel like I want to try this one last time before making such a commitment.
I took the nature thyroid for two days and felt spacey and dream like. I am not sure if that is normal and something I should work through or a sign of needing to not do that. SO confused!!!
But I am feeling less sad than yesterday...thanks for posting

Becca Lynn, I was wondering if you had any "spacey feelings" prior to starting the natural thyroid? Since problems with mental clarity is a symptom hypothyroidism, I wondered when did you noticed it. I am not familiar with natural thyroid. Maybe you can talk with your doctor or a pharmacist about possible side effects and/or other prescription drug interactions.
Forgive me if my mind seems a bit forgetful on this..
But I do believe about 3 years ago my doctor also had me try this. I go to a Homeopathic Doctor, So he wasn't wanting to give me different meds to start with.
I remember having issues that after 2 months I made him switch me to something else, which was the armour thyroid meds. Right now I'm not on them because of.. well basically they are slacking on making it and It's hit and miss when I can get it up here..

It matters a lot what dose your doc started you out on, when you take it, how you split up your dose, etc. Are you swallowing it or taking it sublingually? If swallowing you have to take it on an empty stomach. You do know that iodine can cause a major detox with all those side effects you listed, right? If you have amalgam fillings in your teeth you likely have mercury toxicity and the iodine will detox that along with bromide. It can make you feel REALLY crappy until all that mess is out of your system.
My experience with natural thyroid was atrocious to start with. I was so excited to finally have a dx and jumped right into taking NTH (natural thyroid hormone). I felt great - for 2 days, then I went NUTS, literally! I felt SO sick, worse than before, omg I thought I was dying, heart palps, shaky, tired but wired, thought I was allergic to it, etc. And this was on old Armour before the formula change.
I found out the reason I couldn't tolerate thyroid med is because A) i had increased FAR too much and way too fast, and B) I had no adrenal function. Adrenal support is NECESSARY to proper thyroid function. You literally cannot tolerate any thyroid med without properly working or supported adrenals. It gets into your cells by way of the adrenals, so no cortisol = no thyroid getting into your cells. When this happens it can pool in the blood and T3 converts to reverse T3 which is chemically the same yet it's an isonomer and can't be used by the body. It just piles up in your body, making you feel ten times worse than before.
If you have symptoms of hypo but can't take NTH, I strongly suggest getting a saliva cortisol test to measure your adrenals before taking any more thyroid med.
On the issue of old Armour vs. "new" Armour - we found out from Forest that they changed the amount of dextrose to cellulose dramatically. It used to have something like 47 mg of dextrose to only 7 of cellulose and when they changed things they reversed those amounts. Nothing like a bunch of wood pulp to start your day, right? Both are fillers but that is why so many are feeling like new Armour isn't working properly. Cellulose binds to protein and thyroid hormone is....PROTEIN!!! No wonder people aren't doing well on it. Dumping all that cellulose into the pill makes it virtually useless in the body. It's all bound up so the body can't use it.
Right now I'm not on them because of.. well basically they are slacking on making it and It's hit and miss when I can get it up here..
If you can get your doc to write another scrip for thyroid med, ask him for a paper scrip and write just "thyroid" on it. You can fax it to a Canadian pharmacy. Canada has said that they will honor US prescriptions for natural thyroid due to the shortage down here in the states. It's from Erfa and many say it is actually stronger than the old Armour. Most who take it are extremely pleased with it. And you can sublingual it.
Wow, love the tip on the canadian thyroid. I had to switch back to synthroid since I was pregnant and it was necessary for me to be on a thyroid med. I think I need to get in touch with my doctor again.
I am taking Synthroid....have been since 2002- Is the natural thyroid hormone better? I have never heard of it.

In my opinion, dessicated (natural) thyroid is always going to be better than synthroid, levoxyl, or the like. They are T4 meds ONLY. And my healthy thyroid did not produce just T4. It produced T4, T3, T2 and T1, along with Calcitonin. All crucial elements for healthy hormone function.
