Hello...I'm hoping I can get some reassurance/advice. But first I want to thank u all for this board and your kind posts. You all have helped me pull myself from a very deep dark depression because now I have hope and I know I'm not alone. I think that I have PCOS. I have irregular periods (last one was in Feb. and it is now June!) and excess hair on my thighs >( (it's gotten so much worse after I went off the pill last october).
I have an appt. to see my ob/gyn tomorrow (Thurs.) and I'm going to talk to her about my concerns. I am just so scared!! I'm on the verge of having a panic attack! I don't know how to bring up the subject, and I'm scared of her reaction. I've never been to this dr. before. I don't know what to expect. Will she want to take my blood and do tests right there or will i need a new appt.? Will she be able to prescribe med's to help w/ the hair right away? Am I even "coming out" to the right kind of Dr. ?! Oh I'm so nervous!!! Thanks for letting me vent!
hey if she is a good doc then she will take blood and go over many other symptons you may have not mentioned.
Dont be scared. There is treatment and once you start feeling better it is not such a scary thing.

Its going to be ok sweetie. I agree with Constance. If you are seeing a good, PCOS friendly doctor, she will run all the necessary tests (yes some bloodwork) and prescribe meds.

Some doctors have labs in their offices (or the ability to draw blood and then send it out to a lab) and some doctors may have to write an order and send you to another facility for lab work. It all depends on what your doctor's office does. Its not unusual either way.

Some doctors do prescribe spironolactone (spiro) to help with the hair. If you would like some info on the drug you can do a google search to tell you all about it! It really has helped some women here. I took it for a time for my hair loss on my head and for acne. It did help but I lost my insurance coverage and can't afford it right now.

You said you're going to see an OB/Gyn. Some ladies are very happy with their OB/Gyn. Some ladies here see an Endocrinologist, and some people (me included) see a Reproductive Endocrinologist (RE). The main thing is to find a doctor who is "PCOS friendly" - having knowledge of the syndrome and how to treat it and WILLING to do so... So you're "coming out" to the right kind of doctor, it just depends on if your doctor is "up" on all the treatments available and willing to help you. But if she's not, you can find another doctor!
Don't fret too much! You'll be fine. There's loads of information on this site and in this board, so feel free to look around and find some answers to your questions. Best wishes and let us know if we can help!

(((HUGS))) I know how stressful it is worrying about what the doctor is going to say or do. What the doctor will do depends on their individual knowledge. Just go in armed with information and see where it leads. Stand up for yourself if you have to and don't be afraid to search for another doctor if need be. Good luck! I hope it goes well

Oh! Hugs sweetie! I know how scarey that can be. When I went in to my doctor, I had read about PCOS at an appointment 6-12 months before and thought it sounded like me, but I never said anything because I thought there is no way it could be that easy, read an article in a magazine and I know what's wrong with me! When I was fed up with all the things wrong with me, I took a long list of complaints in with me and poured out my heart. (my np was very sweet) I got finished and she asked if I'd ever heard of PCOS. I said yes in a magazine a few months back. She said I was a classic case and she could tell from the minute I walked in from some of the physical symptoms I was having and that she could do blood tests, but she didn't feel she needed to. (good thing she didn't cause my insurance wouldn't have covered them and when my sister was diagnosed, they won't cover fertility services for her anymore because she is "confirmed" or some stupid thing.)
Anyway, shocker and sadness that it was, I was glad to know because then I could start taking action!(that's my personality, cope with it for a couple of days, and dive it and do what need done!
Sorry to go on and on...
If your doctor doesn't listen to you, your heart already knows what is the problem, keep looking until you find someone you trust. Take in a list of all your complaints and aske what he/she thinks and mention you read about pcos and wondered if there is a connection, because it just seems to fit.

Hi,
I feel for you! I have a "doctor phobia" (as in I used to throw up and have diarrhea before an appointment, my blood pressure would shoot up, etc.) But I have a good gentle doctor and he has helped me with my fears (my blood pressure is even good now, unless he's doing a pelvic )
You have already shown courage by making this appointment! My doctor did a physical on my first visit (also my first time seeing him) and then I had blood tests done right away. Because of my symptoms, he started me on met right away, then he let me wait a couple visits before the ultrasound (which only confirmed what we were sure of-- that I have cystic ovaries).
I have never had excess hair, but mine is thinning. I think the met has helped with that.
Also I take prozac for my depression. Do you take anything to help your depression?
Don't be afraid to if you need it! It has helped me a lot.
Please feel free to vent anytime (email me or pm me if you want to!)
Jenny

Thank you all so much for your kind words. Your encouragement really boosted my confidence going into this. My appt. was okay. The Dr. put me on Yasmin and I am awaiting results for my pap and blood test (ouch! I hate those things...it was worse than the pap!). So now I just wait...
It is good to know I'm not alone. Thank u all for your support!!!!!
Hi Spider,
I'm glad the appointment is over! (Especially the pap and blood test-- the mean stuff, as my doctor calls it! ) Let us know what you find out!
