Unhappy I am very unhappy with my sister's Dr. and need advice!!!

Hey cysters~

I have a problem and I am hoping that one of you lovely ladies could help me with it! Here's the deal...my sister just had a miscarage at about 2 or 3 mos. and since I was dx-ed with PCOS in June/2005, I have been telling her that she needs to get tested so that if she has it she can start taking the meds to get her body ready and healthy eough to have a baby! She didn't have health insurance until she got pregnant, so she never got tested. But yesterday she went to see an OB Dr. to make sure everything was ok after the miscarage and finally to be tested for PCOS. And guess what...the Dr. didn't even ask her what symptoms she had or anything else about it, she simply said that there is no way that she has PCOS because she has already been pregnant!!! Can you believe that!!!!!! I told my sister that, that was a load off BULL because there are lots and lots of cysters on this site who are pregnant right now or have already had children!!! But now she thinks that I am full of crap, because the Dr. is supposed to know what she's talking about...we are taught from a very young age to listen to whatever your Dr. tells you and my sister just thinks that I am making it all up!!! I am very frustrated with her Dr. but mostly afraid for my sister because she wants to try to get pregnant agian and what happens if she doesn't or she miscarries again? We all know that if you have a mother or sister with PCOS that you are way more likely to have it yourself and if she does have it and doesn't treat it, it will cause her a lot of problems in the future!!! Please just tell me what you think I should do or say to make my sister see things the way they really are...and by the way, thanx for letting me vent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am sorry this happened to your sister. Maybe you could send her a link to this site, or perhaps print up some of the information on here and give it to her to look over. Maybe you could also print up some info from the net about PCOS and fertility and have her bring it to her Dr. plus a list of the tests needed to correctly diagnose it. Good luck!

I got this info from http://www.crozerfertility.com/pcos.asp Maybe you could show this to her....particularly the last sentence.

The effect of PCOS on fertility

In order to completely appreciate PCOS and its heterogeneous presentation, it is important to understand the dynamics of follicular growth within the ovary. The follicle which houses the oocyte, or egg, is composed of layers of cells which support the growth of the oocyte through the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle. One cell type, the theca-interstitial cells, responds to LH to produce androgens. Androgens are then converted to estrogens by the granulosa cells in response to FSH. The ovarian response to the gonadotropins is modulated by both ovarian derived and peripheral factors. One such regulator, insulin, augments androgen production by the theca cells and also promotes the proliferation of these cells within the ovary. Although peripheral tissues exhibit resistance to insulin (thus stimulating overproduction), the ovary, however, has an increased sensitivity to insulin and when combined with elevated LH produces the high androgen levels and polycystic ovaries observed in some women. The conversion to estrogens is not as efficient in the PCOS patient therefore the estrogen concentration per follicle is lower than normal. However, the abundance of small follicles together produces an elevated estrogen level. As the development of the oocytes within the ovarian follicles is subject to even the slightest alteration of hormonal environment, the quality of the oocyte(s) and thus resulting embryo(s) can be compromised. This may influence the predisposition of the PCOS patient to experience early pregnancy loss.
