i went to the my regular gp for a pap and pelvic exam. when i brought up the subject of treatment for my pcos. due to the fact that periods have become so heavy and painful. i also have increased hair growth on my face , the dark patches of skin have gotten worse , the skin have increased also.. she told the it was a common probelm among women and not to worry about it but she order an ultrasound anyway to be on the safe side.
this dr has also treated my for depression. i often think that if i could get the phyiscal probelms under control i wouldnt be so depressed. i think i should get a second opinion. SHOULD I WAIT UNTIL AFTER THE ULTRASOUND OR SCHEDULE ONE RIGHT AWAY? WOULD WELCOME ANY ADVICE? ............. i also had gastric bypass 1 year ago and lost 160lbs so far and the experince has been amazing and life saving but i am frustated that the dr seems to think this was a cure-all and i shouldn't feel so horrible all the time
GPs almost always can't help with pcos because they don't know anything. i think it's rare to find a GP and have him know wha tyou're talking about in regards to pcos. your best bet would be to find an endo that is familiar with pcos (i typed 'pcos friendly endo' in my search engine) and go from there. not all endos will know much about pcos either...you have to find one that does.
congrats on losing 160lbs!! that's awesome!! but to be honest....my first thought after reading your post is that if you're still feeling horrible (to use your word) after losing 160lbs...and feeling like it saved your life, your depression might be related tosomething else. maybe you just think it's the pcos causing it because it's the most obvious (weight, dark patches, hair etc). does that make sense?
well done on ur weight loss and welcome to soulcysters

Congrats on your awsome weight loss! I would also encourage your to seek another opinion. Just remember the 5 types of PCOS so even though your u/s may be normal, you could still have PCOS. Most GP are just that for general things. For anything other than a regular annual pap you should be seeing an OB/GYN. And for PCOS it's best to find a Endo. GOOD LUCK.

My G.P. didn't know about PCOS, but only because I told him that I had it. The last thing he said at my last appt. with him was "oh, and there were no cysts on the u/s, so you don't have PCOS after all." I changed doctors that day after seeing him for 23 years.
I have a great doctor now that recognized what I had before I said anything about it.
I'm going to a woman Doctor now, and I am so glad I do. I'm really lucky too, because I found her quickly rather than having to keep trying different doctors. I feel so much more comfortable talking about, well, anything to her than I have in the past to any of my male doctors.
I would get a second opinion and go to an Ob/gyn & an Endo for your PCOS.
A GP is supposed to find out what is wrong by asking you questions and running tests. Then they should refer you to a specialist so they can deal with it the best way possible. GP's are OK for most illnesses like the flu etc, but if it has a Specialist for something, I think a G.P. should refer you to them~because that's why they are called specialists. A G.P. can't keep up with every illness, all the diseases and especially not the procedures involved in healing them.
An Endocrinologist has a degree in Internal Medicine. That's why she/he's so good at hormones and PCOS, and diabetes too.
An OB/Gyn is trained specifically in dealing with the subject of women's reproductive system.
A G.P. is just that. A General Practitioner. Any knowledge is General health.
I have found by experience, that if you aren't comfortable with your doctor, you could leave something too long before you tell them.
Please find a doctor you are happy with and think you can relax with, that will listen to you and "go from there" since it's your body and that's where he should start.
I also recommend to ask for copies of any test results from any doctor. Some ask for money for it, but I've found it very useful at times, especially when I didn't have a doctor and went into clinics for my meds script.
