Lightbulb I don't believe it!

I have been steadily gaining weight, no matter what I do, for the last year. Since last may, I have managed to put on 60 lbs while dieting and exercising. My doctor finally decided to give the okay to treat my hypothyroidism.
I have been on my synthroid for a little over a week now. Today, I got done exercising at Curves and decided to weigh myself. Obviously, sweaty, with heavy clothes and shoes on. Imagine my shock when I saw that I had LOST 10 LBS! I am really pleased, but I am also wondering... did this happen to anyone else? Is this just a "bumper" crop of weight loss, that will go away as my body gets used to the medication? Or, can I expect the weight loss to continue as my body normalizes itself?

If your weight gain is mainly the result of your hypothyroidism, then you can expect to continue to lose as your TSH level goes down. Many women lose weight when they start treatment for hypothyroidism and eventually plateau or lose more when their dosage is increased. Your thyroid controls your metabolism and when you become hypo, your metabolism slows down. Treating your hypothyroidism increases your metabolism (you should have more energy, too). My mom lost 15 lbs in the first 2 weeks of taking Synthroid and she wasn't even trying.

Anyway, congrats on the weightloss!

I wish I could say I was losing weight with increased dosages of synthroid that my doctor has been tweaking since July since my TSH was higher than 3. The latest guidelines say it should be between .3 and 3 with predictions they'll drop that upper range limit to 2.5 and my doctor is shooting for 2. I have been exercising a lot since the beginning of the year and I know I have toned somewhat and definitely feel better, sleep better, etc...but not a lb of weight off the scale. I am trying to not be obsessed about the number and go with the way my clothes are fitting, etc....but it would be nice to see a slight reduction.
