Exclamation I don't know if my Dr. even considers PCOS a problem...

I am not sure if my Doctor (ob/gyn) has actually diagnosed me with PCOS or not, I originally went in to a general practitioner because of black milk coming out of one of my breasts. I had other problems, but did not think there was anything that the Dr. could do about them. She mentioned that it might be PCOS (after hearing my other symptoms) and ordered a blood test for hormone levels & refered me to an ob/gyn.

I am having troubles finding the normal range of testosterone for women.

I have had two test... the first one (morning):
total testosterone - 110
free - ?

2nd test (evening):
total test.- 50
free - 6.6

theese were both through blood tests. (I later heard that having the test in the morning was best... I am wondering if that is why my total level dropped so much, because I am still having all the same symptoms)

I THINK my ob/gyn is trying to diagnos... KIND of... she is giving me progesterone @ 5mg a day 5 days out of the month to bring on my period (I would go months without a period... MAYBE 2 or 3 periods a year), but she is not concerned about my testosterone levels or my other symptoms...
excessive weight gain (w/no apparent reason)
thick black hair sprouting up under chin
not being able to get pregnant (we tried for 3 years... have given up)
bad acne
& other smaller more insignificant things...

In other words, I am getting uglier & UGLIER! I hate looking/feeling this way! I just turned 30 - this cannot be normal!

Whenever I ask or mention anything to her she says its fine... my testosterone tests are "fine" or "that can happen". I have been doing some reading up on PCOS since my general pract. mentioned it and I am astounded by the similarities of what has been happening to me and the symptoms of PCOS!

She will not say if I do or don't have PCOS, yet I have to beg her for blood tests to check on my hormone levels & even then she is only checking my testosterone levels. It's like she does NOT want to find out what is wrong with me.

I second that.. please try to see another doc! You do deserve to be taken care of! There's a find a doctor forum here that might help..

About your testosterone:
http://www.fertilityplus.org/faq/hormonelevels.html

Metformin helped me, it helped me have regular periods, lose weight, and get pregnant. Something to talk about the new doc with!

Hugs cyster, you are beautiful! We are here for you! Please let us know how you're doing!

Ok, first off, you need a new doctor.

Secondly, did they ever figure out why you had black stuff coming out of your breast? Was that taken care of?

Sounds like my exact symptoms, btw--and I'm 32, so not that far "ahead" of you...

Get another doctor. I know that there is a place around here somewhere that links or lists PCOS knowledgable/friendly doctors...but if your insurance is anything like mine, you don't get much choice (DH is in the army)....

((HUGS))

First of all, I know what you mean about feeling ugly. I'm short, I'm round (and was getting rounder and rounder)...I've got hairs popping out where they shouldn't...they must be migrating from my scalp! Acne....weird menstrual cycles...

There's alot of info available farther down in the "symptoms" forums...I've found a lot of helpful advice there...also check out the diet and exercise forums. IF nothing else, they give you hope...

((((HUGS))))

When I was diagnosed My gyno was not helpful @ all. I Was REALLY Scared & Freaked out. Actually, My nurse pract was more helpful then my gyno! Definately you should get a new Dr.

No, they never figured it out... it still happens, but she just said "those things can happen", she DID actually send me to get a mamogram, after i pressed her with more questions she didn't know the answer to, but the guy who she sent me to did a breast exam and said "seems fine, there's no need for a mamogram", even after he saw the stuff coming out.

I'd think they'd at least do a prolactin level because of your breast "leaking". I had one done, because I produced breast milk for awhile when I was on the Depo shot. (It was regular color, not black! My prolactin level was fine, I think mine was just the Depo shot).

They need to help you! I feel for you cyster

Hugs

First thing, fire your doctor. If you don't believe that he/she is working with you as your "partner", find one who does. I went through four of them because, while I'm overweight, I didn't have any excess hair or other classic PCOS symptoms - more IR than anything else. You'd think a qualified endo would just look at my brown neck and skin tags and 'viola' but, noooo......

One of the most important things you can do for yourself is have a doctor or doctors that work with you...

Best of luck -----
