How did you know you had PCOS? When did it start for you? How did it start for you?
I ask this because, well, I'm 19yrs old and I've been having trouble losing weight for forever. I joined a gym, started classes and the whole nine yards. I do roughly 9hrs of spinning classes a week, some extra running on top of that, stairmaster and started weights every other day (and still have plenty of energy to spare). I have always eaten really healthy (I'm a vegetarian, too, btw)--no fast food, no processed frozen meals, no soda, no candy, plenty of veggies and fruit, grains and protein, etc.... yet I can't lose anything. I joined my gym nearly two years ago, and I'm still the same weight I was then. It was this past August, however, that I picked up the spinning classes and really thought those would be the answer, but I didn't even lose a pound. When I first started the gym, I used to only do 30 mins of cardio every other day and that showed nothing. Then I upped it to an hour, still nothing. Then I started an hour everyday, still nothing. Etc, etc. So I didn't just start out doing a ton of cardio, I eased into it and kept adding more after every few weeks when I saw no results.
I had a bloodtest a while back that included a thyroid check and nothing was wrong with it. I can't imagine why else I can't be losing weight.
My period has always been fine in the past--even with all the exercise and dieting. But now my period is a week late so far.. and I don't even feel crampy (like it's about to come).. so I have no idea when it'll come at all and I don't think it's close (and no, I'm not pregnant).
A friend mentioned PCOS to me and said that could be a reason, but when I look through the list of symptons, everything else--aside from depression, which seems expected since I can't lose weight--I don't have. The only thing I have to go on now is trouble losing weight and, for the first time, my period is really late. So, I don't know, there's not much evidence there.
I don't have a primary doctor right now and I have to search through the insurance list to find one, so it's a bit of a hassle.. that's why I haven't gone there yet. I heard, anyway, that there is no one test to show you have PCOS or something. Anyway, I dunno... I'm just looking for answers. If you can share any of your experiences or opinions with me, I'd really appreciate it.
The symptoms of PCOS started showing up for me when I was a young teenager. I had problems with my periods not showing up (after starting early at age 11), so I was put on BCPs at age 13. I started getting darkish patches of skin right about the same time.
After going off BCPs at age 22, I stopped having periods and didn't have one for over 4 years. My hair was falling out. I started growing hair where I shouldn't be (on my chest, on my chin, etc.). I gained weight (a lot of weight) and had trouble taking it off, no matter how much I exercised or dieted. Those things . . . and a host of other things.
Finally I was referred to a reproductive endocrinologist after talking to my regular doctor about wanting a baby and not having periods. The RE heard my list of symptoms and diagnosed me even before she did an internal ultrasound to look for cysts.
Hope this information helps you. Best of luck.

Hi I was first kinda sorta diagnosed 2001 I had a period that would not stop. So i went to a ob/gyn and they actually mentioned the term PCOS to me and referred me to an endo. before that I would get AF once in a while and i had hair where it shouldn't be the dark patches under my arms and i would gain weight just looking at food, but no one would ever tell me what was wrong, they would all say that you need to loose weight and to exercise (and put me on the pill which all that did was make me very sick) which i was always active I went mountainbiking, walking swimming etc, When i went to the endo she did all sorts of tests mri's and lots of blood work, put me on all sorts of pills and sent me on my way she was naming all sorts of conditions but said she couldn't pinpoint pcos. that was then and I really wasn't sure i wanted kids so I did not pursue with her any further due to i felt like i was being a guinea pig and not getting answers. so now it's 2003 and I know decided i want to have children go to my ob/gyn to start mentioned i may have pcos and she didn't seem to acknowledge this sent me for a t/v ultrasound to rule it out and lo and behold there were many cysts and my blood work came back with abnoraml testosterone and glucose, i went to another endo where i was offically diagnosed through more bloodwork and ultrasounds just this year .
