Stick with your Doctor at this point. You can have PCOS and not be IR. I was never dxed IR but Insulin Resistant diets are the only thing that works for me. I also took metformin with great success.
My SIL is obese and her testosterone levels are also high and she was told that it was weight related.
Prolactin is something I know a thing or two about since when I was dxed my levels were also high. I'm a thin cyster and I thought that my prolactin was due to a hangover from previously nursing but apparently it can also be PCOS related. The thing you should know about Prolactin is (and most nursing Moms can concur) it can mess with your cycle.
Hang in there and wait for the U/S first and then see where your Doc wants to take it from there.
I'm not IR and I'm on Met. It seems to be one of those drugs that helps PCOS people whether or not they show up as IR. And I've also heard that you can test in normal ranges for IR but still technically probably be IR.

Sadie-I don't know a lot about IR but the elevated Prolactin could be coming from a Thyroid problem. My gyno had me totally freaked out, she wanted to do MRI's and all these tests until my endo told me that it was caused from my thyroid levels being so off. While my thyroid levels are not yet normal, they have improved, along with my prolactin levels. And as far as being on Met, my doc put me on it for PCOS before we even found out that I was diabetic, so don't get too worked up over that. Hang in there, your doctor will find out what's going on. Don't convince yourself you have cancer, worrying about your health is so stressful, trust me I know, and can cause your more problems. Try to relax and do something you enjoy this weekend. Keep us updated and keep your head up!

It is possible to have PCOS and not be IR.. It's also possible to have IR and not have PCOS. So try not to worry too much and get to conclussions that might be stessing you out. Stress is never good for you About Met, it is also prescribed for other of the PCOS sypmtoms. It should help to improve your levels. To me it sounds like your dr is on the right path Hang in there!
