What should I do????? I am a college student, living with my parents, and only working 10 hrs a week. I have NO money and cannot afford health insurance. I am 23 and to old to go back on my moms insurance. I am not on any meds right now because I cant afford them. I used to be on BCP and Spironolactone. Does anyone know how I can get cheap meds??? Im in wisconsin if that makes any difference.
I have thought about going to Planned parent hood for some birth control. Will they give me BCP even though I am not using them as a birth control??
I know that Walmart has cheap meds and I know met is on the list. How would I go about getting in on that???

when I was in college I went to planned parenthood for bcp. if you aren't going to use it as birth control what are you going to do with it? (sorry, a little confused)
Also, you will need to go to a doctor to get a rx for met. then walmart has the cheap rx program going on, so it shouldn't be to much $$$.

i have the same problem! i just went to planned parenthood though and told them it was to prevent pregnancy and i didn't tell them it was because of PCOS. Also they had me sign up for a program where you can get free birth control for up to a year. I'm in Washington so it's probably through my state! but they know all the programs in your state so i would go to them and atleast give it a try.
Thanks!!! I will definitely check out planned parenthood. I might leave out the PCOS part. I want to get back on birth control so that I can regulate my periods and such.

Unfortunately, unless you're able to get on a group plan offered by a business, you're not going to be able to find individual coverage that covers Infertility. However, depending on how your doctor codes certain things, if you get individual insurance, you may be able to get the tests covered as long as they're not marked for infertility. This isn't a guarantee though, and at some point the insurance may start questioning or denying the tests.
As far as treatment - the frontline medications like Metformin and Clomid you can get at WalMart for $4/$9 respectively because they're on their generic lists. Anything beyond that (including injectibles, IUI, IVF, etc) would have to be paid for out of pocket. You can get medical loans to help cover the costs, or you may be able to find a doctor's office that will allow you to use a payment plan.
Sorry I didn't have better news for you, but unfortunately Infertility is still one of the (few) disease that most private insurances stay far away from.

I am going to school for medical admin and I had to take classes on how health insurance works. Technically since you are still a full time student and under 25 your parents can still cover you on their insurance. I would see if that works, if not then some colleges have student health plans that are either discounted individual plans or they are low cost public health care. Ask your school and see what the policy is for your parents healthcare

When I didn't have health insurance and was dx with PCOS, I decided to go the natural route. I have never taken any medication, still, and have had a regulated period for 18 mos. now. I do a Low Glycemic diet, I am not sure if you have any weight to loose. It's great to loose weight, be healthy in general, control all symptoms of PCOS, have a normal cycle every month, ovulation, etc.
I got extremely creative, knowing that I didn't have money to do all that I wanted and it worked out extremely well. It forced me to do research, more then most I'm sure. Because most people rely on medications, and from what I hear it doesn't do nearly what a Low Glycemic diet did for me. My doctor said if he didn't know I had PCOS, he would never know now.
Research that avenue, if your willing to do that and go that route. It's a great way of eating, I absolutely LOVE it!

Doing Low GI diet as of Sept. 07. DX with PCOS in Sept 07' as well.
Started at a size 24, now a size 14. My waist was 44", now it's 32".
I am on no medication, just diet and exercise.
Thank you all for your support and information! I encourage all of you to do a Low Glycemic diet!
You might also check into local colleges - sometimes they are doing medical studies about PCOS/associated symptoms - and these studies sometimes include medication.
Hi I agree with some previous comments. When I enrolled in college I was forced to purchase the student health plan (good at the on-campus student health center). This was included in all students' tuition costs & you could sign up to see the gyn when she came once day a week...and get checked out whenever you needed to. A girlfriend of mine used to go to the local free clinics...check the health department websites for your city or state.

CVS and Walgreens only do a few select tests. Their prices are pretty good -- a lot better than doctor visit cost. They do have set hours -- something like till 7pm.
