Ok ladies Ive braved the storms and went to the dr. yest. he advised me that he believes if I lose weight my problems should go away( problems as in facial hair, no periods, migranes, and such). This seems somewhat odd, since when i was smaller i had the same problems at 140lbs (which was my smallest) than i did at 180lbs (which is what i am now). Ive lost about 16lbs already, however i don want to be that small my goal is to get back down to 170lbs and stay there. What is this weight loss thing all about. Has anyone heard of this? Just curious....

I have heard many a lady on here say that her Doctor gave her the old"loose weight and everything will be fine!"speech!
I know that weight loss helps and I won't deny that for a second but in your case{at 180lbs.}it seems to me an odd thing to say, especially since you had the same symptoms at 140 lbs.!
It sounds like a bit of a brush off to me and if I were you I would find another Doctor and get a second opinion!
I agree...we have many thin cysters out there that suffer as well. I think they just defer to the obvious instead of actually running tests and making a diagnosis. I'd definitely find someone else that understands PCOS and know it isn't just about losing weight....

My symptoms seem to get better the more weight I lose, but I think it is more than the weight...my diet is different and I excercise more, so my OVERALL health is better.
There are benefits to being at a healthy weight, too much fat is bad for your heart as well as liver functions. I agree just losing weight probably won't have an effect - I was about 145lbs. when I could see some of my first symptoms, but my diet and excercise habits were crap. Once I got those under control everything is getting better.

The times I have been lowest in weight, eating better and in the best shape of my life....I have had virtually no symptoms (other than the acne), and conception has been easier. As my weight has crept up, I have had cycle irregularities, hair growth (and hair loss, now)...
I'd definitely look into what you are eating, nutritionally speaking. Not as in fat, or weight-making foods...but as in whether you are getting the types of vit/minerals your body needs. Are you drinking enough water? Etc.
Even small changes can be helfpul, over time....esp if you gradually change one thing and then another, and then another...they seem to snowball...
BTW...I just wanted to varify that I do believe that weightloss has alot to do with reducing PCOS symptoms.
I have proven that to be true in my own situation.
I just think that alot of Doctors use the whole weight issue to brush off PCOS patients because they don't really KNOW how to deal with it.
This is especially true when the Doctor is not a Specialist...then they are not up to date on the latest treatments in PCOS.
I agree with Erdine, weight loss is important and can really help with symptoms. BUT some docs do use it as an easy out. It really helps, but for many cysters, it's not a cure-all. Before my pregnancy with my daughter, I lost over 100 pounds and actually got into the "normal" weight range for my height. I won't deny that it helped, but not all of my symptoms went away.
So while I completely believe in using weight loss as a treatment for PCOS, it wasn't enough by itself for me. And if any doc makes you feel like you're getting the "brush-off" then I would suggest another opinion! Everyone deserves to be listened to!
Best wishes getting to your goal weight by the way, I'm working on that too! (Don't they say slow but steady wins the race? I hope so...)
Hugs
Jenny

Your post reminded me of my own experience. When my periods first became irregular i was about 30lbs over my weight. My dr gave me some BCP and told me to lose weight that would fix the problem but i remember she didn't do any tests. So I started taking the BCP and yes my period came back but i couldn't lose weight. As a matter of fact it seems that i kept gaining and gaining weight regardless of my efforts to lose it. I was so discouraged that i even stopped taking the BCP and again my period stopped completely. I knew something wasn't right but i didn't want to go to the dr just to hear to lose weight. Then came my other symptoms. The facial hair, acne, i started losing my hair, still no period at all for months, i felt ill and tired all the time, very emotional. I didn't know what was wrong with me, i just felt awful. So i finally decided to go to another dr because i just felt so bad. Right away she told me, I think you have PCOS. She then sent me to an RE. That was the best thing to happen to me ever. She order all the tests, i had an ultrasound and i was finally diagnosed. I remember my RE told me, you need to lose weight to prevent future risks and to help you feel better she said, but there is a reason why you haven't been able to do so. Turns out being Insulin Resistant was making me gain weight. She put me on Metformin and gave me a 40-30-30diet. I have to say, losing weight is still a struggle but i have actually seen better results now. And most importantly, i feel so much better. Now I think, I could have saved my self a lot of emotional and physical pain if the first dr would have taken the time to do some tests instead of just taking the easy way out telling me to lose weight
Sorry so long. Best Wishes!

I had this exact same experience! I have been diagnosed for 3 years, and I am still so angry over it . . . I can't tell you how many times I INSISTED to doctors that something was wrong!!! They all patted me on the head and told me to lose weight. They gave me "diet plans" to follow -- all full of pasta, rice, and dry baked potatoes. Now I have Type II diabetes on top of PCOS. I can't eat that stuff and lose weight . . . so I am still angry after all of this time for being made to feel like I just wasn't trying hard enough, when really, it was their collective lack of giving a crap!
. . . ahem . . . sorry for the threadjack . . . I guess I must be having issues . . . lol. Thanks for letting me vent!
I am a thin cyster and can verify what Haeneleh said about those of us who don't struggle with their weight still having other pcos symtoms. While no dr ever told me to lose weight and my symptoms would get better... it went the opposite way. I had a few dr's tell me that I couldn't possibly have pcos because it was a weight disorder. After seeing a RE for the first time last year, I was finally dx'd. It makes a world of a difference to go to a RE (or a dr that's clued in to pcos, which not a lot are), and to be actually listened to!!!
