Unhappy I guess just diagnoised w/diabetes??help Q's

Ok, so heres a bit of background.
A doctor thought I had PCOS when I was 16 (did an ultrasound and found all the little cysts), but at a followup all those cysts dissapeared and she said no that I did not have PCOS and that was that. Flashforward a few years later, well age 18, I went to a gyno due to finally being fed up with my irregular bleeding and he diagnosed me as PCOS...fine ok...was on and off of metformin...(still have been up unti lthis very moment)...in the last 8or9months my periods have been really regular (without met or bc) so I ahve been on nothing. 5/27/09 I had a reg check up and my fiance urged me to have my glucose checked (I was way up on having it regularly checked as diabetes runs heavily on my moms side, but had let it slip for the last year-year and a half)...he did a quick on the spot check and found it was high (about 150) and so he did the HA1c (I guess, at the time all I knew was it owuld check my levels for the last 3months or so) anyways he told me it was high and told me to up my metformin a pill and stay on it.....
So today(July 30th) My fiance handed me my mail, we had been in Sacremento for his moms surgery and had gotten home about 3 days ago so our mail had piled up), in it was a letter from the Tribal doctors office, I opened it and began to read it...it was the results from the glucose test and was from the main doctor (my "doc' is a nurse practitionor, but I have seen him since I was 14 off and on)..anyways, it says that my HA1c is 7.2..and on the line for notes she wrote "this meand you have diabetes. I knopw you are already on metformin for PCOS but it looks like you have also developed underlying diabetes."
Wth? Even though most of my moms side has had diabetes I know it as type 1 or 2....so this is kind of confusing to me...im kinda freaked out (though Ihad been saying since a teen that if i did not eat better that i would prob develope it, im still kinda shocked). I have to call tomorrow and get set up with the diabetes team that my Tribe offers and have a follow up, but Im kind of wondering what underlying diabetes is and why because Im at 7.2 that qualifies me as being diabetic now?...I looked it up and am still not too clear on it. So I would so very much appreciate it if anyones knows about this if they could help me figure out what the numbers and underlying part means. Thanks a whole bunch, much luvs to you all. (Thanks for reading).

Missyrooloo,

Welcome! I have pre-diabetes. I have had reactive hypoglycemia (up and down blood sugar and strange hypos since I was 16) I am 25 now and was diagnosed at 22 with pre-diabetes/type 2 (it really is the same thing, I'm just not technically "bad" enough/ sugars high enough).

An HA1C is your 3 month average blood glucose level (should be done 4 times a year to check how your medication & you are controlling your sugars). A 7.2% (160) is well above the level for diabetes. Anything above a 6 is considered diabetic. My last HA1C was at a 5.5% (110) (and I am on Metformin). Most diabetes strive to have an HA1C below a 6.5% to lower the risk of complications (nerve damave, gastroparesis, eye issues) etc. Most importantly do you have a monitor? If not you should buy one and start testing. Testing is the key to finding out what foods you can and can not eat--- I can't have most desserts and anything "white." It is best to stick to 30-45 grams of carbs for meals and 15grams for snacks, drink water or diet soda, and try to eat sugar-free or "free" foods like protein, veggies, and most fruits (some are high in sugar like pinapple).

Most important aim for a fasting and pre-meals of under 100 and no higher than 140 2 hours following a meal--- that will keep your blood sugars in the under 6.5 HA1C range.

I know this is all a little overwhelming but we are here to help! Diabetesdaily.com is a WONDERFUL website to get you started on learning about diabetes and coping with this condition.

Feel free to ask as many questions as you like

Many times metformin may not be enough to keep your sugars under control but if you eat a low-carb diet that should help (are you doing that?).

Thanks a ton for your reply....it is a bit overwhelming with trying to find stuff online about it...I cannot get into the doctors diabetes clinic until the end of next month, So I am very thankful for your advice and knowledge. I had my test done in May and just turned 23, I always knew there was the risk of developing diabetes due to my family history but never htought it would be so soon....Im taking this (as well as my sister and Gram, gram has diabetes and sis is I guess borderline *she has not recently been checked..I guess borderline would be similiar to what you have), we are taking it as a "wake up call" to get healthy, especially Gram as she lets herself run out of her meds and does not always due what she knows she needs to.

As far as monitoring I think that my doctor is going to get me a monitor to chekc my sugars...I go through the Tribal office where I live and they have the whole program set up...TG..=D

Thanks again so very much for your help, it is beyond appreciated and I thank you for your offer of talking if I have anymore Q's or concerns.
Take care =D

I was diagnosed with diabetes in May 2000. At that time I thought my life was over. It is very overwhelming when you are first diagnosed.

Borderline and pre-diabetes are the same thing. Most doctors use the term pre-diabetes now.

Diet and exercise along with the Metformin should help you lower your numbers. I have been on Metformin since 2005 although I did switch to insulin during both my pregnancies. I've also had good luck with cinnamon and fenugreek tea. I brew the tea, add cinnamon and pour it over ice. You can also put cinnamon in low fat yogurt.

Occasionally, you might find yourself going too low. Especially if you've been exercising or it's been a while since you ate. There are glucose tablets for that but imo they taste nasty. I carry hard candy in my purse for when I go low. Raisins and jelly beans are also good.

Here is a wonderful, inexpensive book that will help you sort everything out. AmazonAmazon I bought my copy at WalMart.

Another wonderful website is dlife.com. In fact that was where I learned about soulcysters.
