I was a little hesitant to share this with all of you because everyone has an opinion when it comes to the connection between depo provera and pcos.
I was on depo approximately 5 years ago for about a year. I got terribly sick while I was on it and have never been the same since. A little over a week ago I walked out of my naturopath's office with an herb for a hormone imbalance and a supplement for adrenal support. I'll admit I was confused. She had explained why she was giving them to me, but I was trying to retain so much information that day that I was bound to miss something. I definitely remember her saying "Your body was completely slammed by the depo, and now we're going to fix it". So when I got home I started to research the connection between depo, adrenal support, and hormone imbalance.
The first thing I found out was that the herbs my naturopath gave me were for the treatement of adrenal fatigue. The following link provides a list of symptoms that accompany adrenal fatigue:

Surprisingly enough, this is not a condition that is widely accepted by conventional doctors. So now that I understood why my naturopath had given me the supplement for adrenal support, I was determined to figure out how this happened.
This is my theory:
As all of you already know, when you take any form of birth control, hormones are being put into your body, but they are not identical to the hormones that your body produces itself. I believe that when I was on the depo, my body recognized it as foreign and started fighting it, like an infection. When you have an infection or are stressed, your body deals with it by sending a signal to your adrenal glands to pump out cortisol. Well, my adrenal glands worked around the clock for almost a year while I was poisoning myself with this crap. They became exhausted and are now unable to supply my body with enough cortisol. A host of problems can occur when your adrenal glands aren't working properly, including the inability for your body to balance your hormones.
So that's what I think happened to me. I wanted to share it with all of you because I know there are other women here who have had horrible experiences with depo and there is not a lot of information forthcoming from doctors about adrenal fatigue. The good thing about it is, it is a fixable condition. We are the best advocates for our own health.
