Default I have a question/comment about D-Chiro-Inositol

Hello everyone,

I was reading about d-chiro-inositol on the web and how a deficiency could be the root cause of insulin resistance and it said that it is a substance that is naturally found in fruits and veggies.

So, since d-chiro-inositol is not on the market yet, I was thinking, if instead someone would take a green superfood supplement since they are very popular on the health food scene, could this replace taking the drug d-chiro-inositol by providing the body enough of this substance?

If Insulin Resistant- PCOS is caused by a d-chiro-inositol deficiency and this is food in fruits and veggies, then this would mean that IR is caused by a deficiency of fruits and veggies no? So by drastically increasing consumption of fruits and veggies, wouldn't it solve the problem?

The reason I mention green food supplements is because it would be hard to consume the amounts of fruits and veggies to get enough d-chiro-inositol for it to make a difference. With concentrated green food supplements like wheatgrass, barleygrass, chlorella, spirulina, powdered carrot or beet juice and the list goes on, you get a very high dose with little effort. I remember about 2 years ago contacting a company called " Pines International". They make very high quality wheatgrass powder and they told me that one teaspoon of wheatgrass is the equivalent of 3 servings of fruits and veggies or one full plate of spinach.

Anyway, I might be completely off track but its just something I was thinking about. Any comments?

I found something on a fertility website that sort of answers my questions:

" This is one of the most common diseases responsible for infertility. With PCOD, your body begins to manufacture high levels of testosterone, estrogen and LH. This hormonal imbalance causes menstrual irregularities and ceases ovulation. In most cases of PCOD, medication can help reverse this imbalance and help a woman achieve ovulation. Studies have shown that women with PCOD who eat a diet high in fresh fruits and vegetables have a higher chance for conceiving. Many fresh fruits and vegetables contain a supplement called D-chiro-inositol, which is linked to higher conception rates in women diagnosed with PCOD. In extreme cases of this disease, infertility cannot be reversed. "

That's really interesting, Emmanuelle. The only thing is that eating fruit can cause insulin spikes; only low GI fruits should be consumed if you are insulin-resistant, and even then, in small quantities. So we should really be relying on veggies for the inositol.

I think the greens supplement is a good idea, but is the D-chiro-inositol preserved in the processing? That's something I would want to find out, although I doubt that any companies can guarantee this. If you can find out any more info, please post.

Simone

Hi Simone, I agree with you that too much fruit is not a good idea but most green superfood supplements don't have fruits in them. They usually only contain veggies and superfoods like wheatgrass, barleygrass, spirulina and chlorella which are called " superveggies" because they pack more nutrients then regular veggies. I will try to find out about the preservation of the d-chiro-inositol although I believe the greenfood supplements would have even more of this substance then regular veggies.

The reason I say this is because unless you are eating only organic fruits and veggies, much of the nutrients are lost with pesticide use and exporting. If you use a very good brand of green food like Pines or BarleyGreen or Earthrise or other good brands, they use only organic foods and the nutrients are preserved. But, I'll still try to find out if I can get a nutritional analysis of the amount of d-chiro-inositol in these products.

Here's some info I found:

" Recent research has shown that buckwheat contains chiro-inositol and
other galactosyl derivatives of chiro-inositol. Ortmeyer et al (1993)
showed that treatment of type II diabetics with D-chiro-inositol may be
effective in lowering the symptoms of diabetes. While several
laboratories are working to develop sources of D-chiro-inositol,
buckwheat manufactures it naturally.
(Approximate levels of D-chiro-inositol in buckwheat products: Fancy
flour: 14.5 mg per 100 grams, Farinetta: 84.9 mg per 100 grams,
grits/groats: 23.3 mg per 100 grams, Supreme flour: 34.1 mg per 100
grams.) "

We would have to eat a whole lot of buckwheat to get the amount needed of d-chiro-inositol LOLL :-)
