I have a question for a possibly serious condition.
I was in the chatroom the other day and I was told if I take birth control pills for pcos they can cause Pulminary embolisms (blood clots to the lungs) I took Ortho Tri cyclen for 2 years and am now on Yasmin and not having a problem with them so far. Does anyone know anything about this, or any advice for me?
There are a ton of possible side effects with BCP's (though the docs never seem to tell you that!). I stopped BCP's because aside from the fact they made me feel like a mental patient, they also gave me stroke-like symptoms.
That being said, the majority of women have no trouble with BCP's at all. Talk to your doc for more details, but I think the embolism things is pretty rare. Just keep a close eye on your health and bring any concerns to your doc.
Just one cystah's humble opinion. Good luck!

Although I personally don't recomend BCP for the treatment of PCOS, mainly because they don't treat PCOS they just mask some of the symptoms. I do believe that there are alot of woman with PCOS that really like them. I don't believe that having PCOS puts you at any higher risk then anyone else when useing BCP.
But that is JMO.
PCOS doesn't make the risks of side effects any higher. They warn people that BCP do come with a risk of clot clots and stroke, and smoking increases those risks (wow, I apparently have seen way to many commercials for the things). Most woman can take them with minimal problems. Just watch yourself and if you experience anything that worries you, don't be afraid to call your doctor.

Pulmonary embolisms are usually associated with women who take the pill and smoke. I had a bout of bronchitis at one point and they thought I had one, (I smoke) alas, it is very rare. Do some research on the symtoms of clots, usually pain in the legs and swelling. If you don't smoke I think you will be ok.

Thanks for all of your advice and info. I went to the endo on Friday and I am definitely having a problem with the yasmin. I am on Spiro and he wants me to go on Glucophage instead of bcps. I explained that I have an anti-cardiolipin antibody which makes me at high risk for blood clots. The birth control pills will put you at a small risk for blood clots but having the anticardiolipin antibody puts me at a higher risk. He said that my gyno should've explained all of that to me from the start which she didn't. Anyway I go back to her on the 16th of this month and I hope to get some things straightened out.
