I'm 33, I have no children although I was hoping to have some one day.... about a month ago I was diagnosed with PCOS and I have been scrambling to get myself together ever since. Im about 40-50 lbs overweight. My doctor didn't give me any information except for a hard to read list of foods i can and can't have, she told me my cholesterol numbers were in reverse and and then told me to research PCOS on the internet... wow how helpful she was.... this is what brings me here... I have started working out everyday for 45 minutes, I do about 30 minutes of cardio(10 of which are running) and about 15-20 minutes of weights... is that enough to lose weight?
Also I know that after a cardio workout you are supposed to have carbs but with my PCOS should I still do that???
I feel like this diagnoses is a blessing because i've wanted to lose weight for a long time and now im kind of forced to....but at the same time in the back of mind my i'm ready to ball my eyes out and i'm really trying to keep it together. I have a chin full of hair that i shave everyday and it makes me feel so bad about myself.
I went to the drugstore and bought Saw Palmetto, cinnamon extract, ginko biloba, multi vitamins, asprin, milk thistle, evening primrose oil.... geez i don't even know if i really need it all im just trying to do everything that i read about.
Welcome to the site. I hope you find everything you're looking for here. I'm not sure about the herbs as I've never taken any of those. I managed my pcos by losing weight through weight watchers. Of course, that doesn't always work for everyone.

First Welcome to SC!
It sounds to me like you need to find another doctor, someone who specilizes in PCOS. The wonderful thing about PCOS is there is no one size fits all, because everyone's body is different. I know there is a thread on here for newbies, and I will find it for you so you can ask the new dr about what is going on with you.
You seem to taking ALOT of herbal supplements and I just caution you to ask a pharmacist about what you mixing together because mixing supplements can be VERY dangerous.
This will be yr 6 of working things out with PCOS and I'm STILL trying to find the right combination that works just for ME. A GI (Glycemic Diet) is what I've heard works well for those of us with PCOS, insulin resistant, or Diabetic. I also work out, 30-35 mins cardio, and 1 hr with a personal trainer doing core, flexibilty, and weight training. I would suggest this book, which will help you put meals together and also has an exercise plan that will help you. It's called The Low GI Diet Revolution by Dr. Jennie Brand-Miller, Kaye Foster-Powell, and Joanna McMillian-Price (you can get it at Waldens or Borders books store for like $17 this is including tax). I've slowly learned that with having PCOS and exercising we kind of have to follow what is best for us not those other folks who can eat and gobble up everything...lol. I'm having to work that out even with my trainer...I'm schooling her...lol. Gradually workup working out, don't think you have to run a marathon to get results, Rome was not built in a day.
Sounds like you are dealing with what they call free adrogens- the wondeful hormone that cause excess hair and acne. This is me too and I'm about to find a doctor who can help this out. Some people are on meds for this like Spironolactone (Spiro for short).
Please feel free to look around, and ask question. This site if FULL of information at your fingertips.

I am also new to SC, but I am not new to PCOS. I was diagnosed at 19 and am 22 now. I understand the amount of anxiety that comes with being diagnosed. I was really upset in the beginning, one of my main goals in life is to be a mom. My plan was to graduate with my art degree and business minor and meet some great guy and be able to run my own home based business and take care of my kids. When I found out about all the complications that come with PCOS I felt like I lost that dream. But it was also in a weird way empowering, as you said regarding weight loss, now there is a reason to work harder. But like weight loss, it is a long, hard process and you need to be patient because you will not reap all the benefits overnight but the end will justify the means. The most important thing is to try to be positive, there's lots of research being done and many procedures to help alleviate pain and help women conceive. I admit that I still have problems keeping that light at the end of the tunnel in sight, but it is there. Don't let PCOS control you, because you can control it.
Stay strong, you will make it.
