Question I was just Diagnosed and I have many questions and here is one

Is a low card diet necessary? I have changed my diet completely but I see alot of people here have almost cut out all carbs.

I believe the reason for the low-carb diet is that many women with PCOS also experience insulin resistance, and so lowering their amount of carb intake works especially well for losing weight (and living healthier). I could be wrong, though. This is just my assumption. (I use neither a low-carb diet, nor am I aware if I have IR.)

It's important to do a low carb diet (especially if you are officially diagnosed IR). However, I recommend staying away from a no-carb diet. Personally..I say anything in moderation. I still eat plenty of carbs, but I try to stay away from pasta, rice, potatos, and white breads (although I even eat some of these). For me...since Im on metformin..my body doesn't like when I eat a ton of carbs, so since I dont want to be in the bathroom the rest of the day..I just limit it. It's really a personal decision. Oh..and one other thing. It's super important to always balance the carbs you do eat...with a protein. So, a piece of string cheese with a slice of whole wheat toast lightly buttered is a decent breakfast. Good luck.

Oh..I also find that the met. helps me not crave those bad carbs too. I think your body adjusts to not eating them as much. I cant even look at mashed potatos anymore..and I used to LOVE them.

I was diagnosed with pcos and IR and I took my first Met yesterday I could not stay out of the bathroom. I am glad this web site is here because I would have worried about the bathroom issue. But in between bathroom trips I read about it here. THANK YOU! for this website.

I just don't feel good when I eat too many carbs. When I don't take Met and I eat carbs I get so sleepy I really can't stay awake. When I do take Met and eat carbs it upsets my stomach. So even though I LOVE carbs I try to stay away from them. Unlike a lot of people this does not seem to have caused me to lose weight, but it's probably b/c I'm not vigilant about it. I just feel better, though.

The carbs I eat are whole grains, fruit and veggies. I avoid the others.

I've never had an issue with how much carbs I am eating. As long as they are good carbs and I've got a good balance of carbs, protein and good fats I'm not too concerned. Although I guess its intuitive after spending 3 years studying nutrition!

Hi Diana,
How are you? Hope you are doing good. Thanks for all the opinion and advices you have posted on this link. Its helpful. Im a soulcyster dealing with the weight issue and am desperately trying to lose some weight but so far have been unsuccessful. Any advice from you would be helpful. I am trying to cut of carbs totally. I am Insulin Resistant. Ive been stuck at the same weight for a long time. I have been doing exercise on and off. Tho, i do tend to eat sweet things from time to time? Is that bad? I know it probably is. But like i just started working at this new place, and they have donuts at work like every other day. I tend to eat them. And not just 1 but 3-4 at a time. Im so disgusted with my self. I cant share this with my boyfriend. And every time when i eat them i tell myself next time i wont eat them or eat 1 and then again same thing i eat like 3. But other than that im working out, exercising, tread mill, trying to do about 700 to 1000 calories. Im really trying. But im not eating carbs. Ive totally left rice, and also brown breads. Tho a day ago i did have whole wheat pasta, chicken and salad for lunch. But other than that im staying away from carbs. It might be bad. But i do not know. My bf feels cutting out cabrs will help me lose weight a lot faster. Its so hard tho. I was on 1000mg Met, and i recently went up. I think at the beginning at the end of the month. And went up to 1500mg. And my cravings are alot better. But i personally think i should go up to 2000mg. And it will make things a lot easier for me. By going up on Met my cravings have stopped to an extent. Cravings for bread. But like i said im still eating sugars. Im very very very desperate to start losing weight. Even if i start shedding a pound or 2 or something, a lil bit, just to see that i can lose weight. Ive been stuck at the same numbers. Please if you can give me any sort of advice it will be helpful. I found this website and its wonderful that we women have a way of sharing things and information. I feel that you're a very warm and caring person and so i wanted to get your advice and opinion.....? And yes tho i do feel that things should be in moderation..........so let me know how you feel.....???
Waiting anxiously for your reply...

I have a question for Jcole030 that the people who you know who have completely cut carbs out, has that helped them lose weight? How are they health wise?

For me I have cut out some carbs but I love pasta so that one is hard for me. I have cut out sugar almost completely, I only have sugar in my morning coffee and I don't eat or drink things with alot of sugar. Since I have cut out sugar I have lost 25lbs. I eat alot of fruit and veggies, if I get a craving for sugar I eat fruit and it helps alot.

I wish you all luck! It's hard changing habits, but it eventually becomes second nature.
