Hi all. I was recently diagnosed as being hypothyroid (again) I was once diagnosed but then they told me my levels were normal again so I was taken off meds. Now they tell me my thyroid is messed up again and I've been for all kinds of testing. Last year I did atkins and lost 25 lbs (10 or more bc of being sick) I gained it all back plus more. In the past two months I would say I have gained 15 lbs and steadily gaining. I don't know what to do I feel so out of control. I eat normal (not extremely healthy but not really bad either) and each time I step on the scale I have gained another 2-3 or more lbs. What do I do? Is there something else seriously wrong with me??
Could you tell us a little more about yourself? Have you recently gone off or changed BCPs? Have you had a full work-up for PCOS, and if so, what did it show? Are you on any meds for it? Did you get a FULL thyroid work up, or did they only test for TSH? There's lots of different things that can cause what you're experiencing.
I went off BCP last year when we decided to start a family (had been on them pretty much continuosly since 1989). Long story short, I found that any week that I wasn't on BCPs (or that I wasn't on estrogen or estrogen + prometrium to induce a bleed) I would gain weight. Also, the longer I was off those meds, the oilier my skin got, I would see dandruff, I would get zits in all sorts of places, and hair in places it shouldn't be growing (Hello, Tweezerman!!), etc. It was awful.
During the intervals that I was back on BCPs (for some non-PCOS diagnostic stuff) or the Estrogen + Prometrium, I would lose weight, and all of the other symptoms would subside. In retrospect, it was like there was a lightbulb going off, and I didn't see it.
Since March, I've been diagnosed with a borderline hypothyroid condition ("normal" for most lab purposes, but not "optimal" for my RE) and PCOS (ovarian cysts, hair & skin problems, the weight gain, etc.). We're still working on fine-tuning my meds (synthroid + metformin).
I hope this helps - I've found the women here to be (generally) very, very supportive and very knowledgable.
Best,
Ann

I'm not sure what kind of labs they did at the doctors office but he sent me for a TON of tests (thyroid ultrasound, ovary ultrasound yesterday, adrenal CT scan) and lots of bloods. He said he was going to do everything on the board just to be safe so I don't know what that means but that's how they found out I was hypothyroid. He did say that my male hormones were higher than they should be and that a lot of my bloods were consistent with PCOS but I guess I won't get the real diagnosis until I see him again in a few weeks. And yes! I just stopped BCPS about 4 months ago and have been steadily gaining since then. I had no thoughts at all that that might be the reason I've been gaining. I stopped them because my husband and I want to have a baby and I knew it would take a while to get preg but I haven't had a period since then. I'm going to ask my doctor the next time I see him about this. Maybe there's something they can do to get my hormones regulated a little more without actually having to put me on BCPs bc as I said before I really want a baby. Thanks for your reply!

I hadn't thought of that before (never heard of it) but I'm going to check it out and see what I find out. Maybe it would be useful to the rest of my family especially my mom who is also hypothryoid and probably undiagnosed PCOS (same symptoms). Which diet plan is it that you have started?

Hi!
I'm glad that he ran comprehensive b/w. The one thing that I have to say is that PCOS is a syndrome. The problem with it is you can have some, but not all, of the signs of it. I.e., some women with it are overweight, some are not; some women have textbook cystic ovaries, some do not; some women are IR, some are not. Some docs will see that you're missing a few of the "tell-tale" signs of PCOS, and **presto**, they diagnose you as NOT having PCOS.
It sounds like your doc is thorough, which is really good. And there ARE women with PCOS who have succeeded in having children (so many great stories on this board!!), so don't give up hope!!
Best of luck to you,
Ann
