Is anyone on Metformin who DOESN'T have PCOS? I just got a call from my doc that I have insulin resistance and starting on Wednesday she's putting me on a drug (after lots of reading online, I'm guessing she'll put me on this Met drug). She didn't say anything about PCOS but when I saw her earlier for a checkup she seemed pretty certain that I don't have it.
So what I'm wondering is, if I don't have PCOS and haven't been able to get pregnant for about a year now, will just being on Met help me get pregnant? Anyone have a similar story?
Insulin resistance doesn't automatically mean you have PCOS. If your doctor doesn't think you have it after running all the usual tests, then you probably don't.
If you haven't been ovulating, Metformin could indeed help you to get pregnant.
Thank you! It's one of those questions that you just HAVE to have someone say yes to, ya know?
By the way, I think I do ovulate. My cycle is consistently 30 days, and I always get cervical mucus 14 days before my period. But of course, that isn't an absolute guarantee that I'm releasing an egg. So needless to say, I'm ecstatic to be put on this drug!
I don't have PCOS, though I'm really IR. I took Metformin for five months, but never could adapt. It made me really sick. Switched to Actos. I never stopped ovulating, but at almost 44 I think my chance of getting pregnant is almost nil. I had a stillbirth last December we think due to my very high insulin levels. I don't know if Met helped or not since I haven't gotten pregnant again, besides a chemical pregnancy in September.

You sound very similar to me - I don't have PCOS (or at least the Dr didn't seem to think that I did). I do have IR though; and was put on metformin about a month ago. I thought that I ovulated as well b/c I had regular cycles, etc - but I found out that one cycle that was totally normal that I did not ovulate. The Dr took my P4 levels and it was 0.8; should be 10 or greater to show ovulation. I'm going to have it tested again this month to see if I ovulated this cycle.

If you thought you were ovulating, what made your doctor test your P4 levels?
Having the Polycystic Ovaries - pearl like string of underdeveloped eggs is a SYMPTOM of insulin resistance.
They really should change the name of this syndrome.
The root of it all is ***Insulin Resistance*** - even men get it but we can't say men have PCOS as they don't have ovaries!!
However if they did they would have the pearl like string of immature eggs we call PCOS on their ovaries!!!!- they are not really even cysts...
PCOS is a symptom of INsulin Resistnace. That is all. Some women with PCOS who lose weight and these "cysts' disapear as their Insulin resistance has been lessened.. the same goes with Met.. .some girls take MEt for a few months , lose weight and the cysts go...
Doctors are now realising that most IF NOT ALL PCOS women have INsulin resistance and some have progressed to type 2 diabetes it just depends on how BAD your IR is.... TO WHETHER THE TEST SAYS YOU HAVE IT TOO.
A good indication is an apple shape, putting more weight on around upper stomach and waist....craving sugars and carbs, getting tired easily after white carbs. and sugar.
Some are just above normal and tests show they don't have it but really they do, the tests not all ways accurate.
If you have IR quite badly the test is positive but as I said most PCOS women do have IR as the cystic ovaries is a symptom of IR.

I guess it was because he wanted to do all of the necessary tests. I am THRILLED that he tested my levels b/c we would have gone on for months and months w/o realizing that I wasn't ovulating. Even though I had all the classic signs of ovulation I didn't actual pop that egg. I have no ideas what my ovaries look like now - haven't had an U/S on them in YEARS (and that was just secondary b/c I had a gallbladder U/S at the time, and the US person checked out my entire torso).
The only way to 'prove' ovulation is either by pregnancy, or a hormone test.

This is NOT correct. I have PCOS and do not have insulin resistance. PCOS IS NOT a symptom of Insulin Resistance. HOWEVER, IR is a symptom of PCOS. Not all woman with PCOS have IR.
Having IR doesn't mean that you have PCOS and vise versa. The string of pearls on the ovaries ARE cysts and some woman do feel them each time they burst. It varies woman to woman, but they most definitely ARE cysts.
Ditto to everything stellarchik said. I'm a thin PCOer WITHOUT IR. I'm on met to hopefully help with ovulation. The thing to remember is that there is HUGE spectrum of PCOS from very mild to very severe.
