Default I love my new epilator but am looking for some advice

I recently bought an epilator and love it, for the most part. I am able to do my chest and stomach with no problem but it really hurt when I tried it on my upper lip and and afterwards it was very red for almost 2 days. If anyone has any advice on how to deal with the pain and redness I would appreciate it. I must say though to anyone thinking about it I think the pain was worth it because I have to shave at least once a day and have gone 3 so far without any hair, I'm hoping to build up the courage to try my chin and neck next.

Epilators are FANTASTIC!

I have never done my upper lip, but with my legs and underarms, the more I do it, the less it hurts. I still get the redness but Im sure its not as bad as the first time I did it. (ie it doesn't stick around for as long)
I tried my chin/neck but to be honest I just have long pale hairs round there and I didn't notice a difference (and I don't think anyone but me notices them anyway)

PS - I cried the first time I did my underarms, now I'm so grateful to myself that I did them - I can wear sleeveless tops with confidence now! The 'shadow' is more or less gone!

I LOVE my epilator as well! I bought it to do my chin/neck and upper lip. The upper lip is the worst! Have you tried doing it right after a shower? The hot water generally helps to open up your pores a bit, I believe, and it should make it a bit easier to epilate. Also I think the little booklet thing that came with mine recommends that you put cold water on it right after you've epilated. That should apparently help with the redness. I usually do mine in the evening, before bed, then my skin has all night to recooperate.

Februarystar.... Underarms?!? OUCH!! I can't imagine doing my underarms! it'd be nice... but OUCH!

I've tried to think of ways to describe the pain but its just not comparable. I was bleeding!
It did only take about 4 or 5 goes before it wasn't painful at all (well no worse than plucking my eyebrows!)

I LOVE it!

personaly for me i only epilate under my jaw and i may start doing my chin but for the moment shaving my chin is fine for me, as is shaving the upper lip. the thought of epilating my upper lip ......OUCH that would hurt its so sensitive. i would rather shave or bleach and trim that bit. i sometimes epilate my legs but not the under arms i have course very stubborn hair there and it would hurt too much for my liking lol

I once did HALF an underarm and could not bear to do any more.

Luckily my underarm hair doesn't bother me anyway. It's blondish and grows slow, unlike the rest of the hair on my body.

Girls, I need some help. I've been using my epilator on and off for a few years. Each time I use it, I get frustrated when I see the TONS of ingrown hair I get. What do you girls do to exfoliate? A loofah does nothing for me and I haven't found a good exfoliating body wash. Can someone recommend a good product? Thanks in advance!

You know I really think it is the luck of the draw. Some people respond well to Yanking hair out by the root and some don't. After lots of epilating for the most part my legs look fine for a little while and then they look horrible because of ingrown hairs etc. I have tried all the methods. I have used a loofah. I have used lotions with hydroxy acids, alpha and beta. I have even purchased a product called tend skin which is basically very expensive aspirin dissolved in an alcohol solution. Nothing made a different, my legs would look like crap with ingrowns and red bumps.

I kind of have a theory that maybe what determines if you will get ingrowns or not is related to your personal level of keratin production. Keratin is the hard stuff that piles up on the skin and causes rough, dry bumps on the backs of the arms, fronts of the thighs, etc - called keratosis pilaris. I have this on my arms. I also have ALWAYS had red noticable hair follicles on my legs - not bumpy but noticable. Whether I shave or not, epilate or not, wax or not - they are there - but worse when epilated hair grows in. I really wonder if the two are related. I have been taking Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega capsules for a while not and it has really made the backs of my arms smoother. I notice less redness on my legs, too so I am curious to see if MAYBE using an epilator now will result in fewer ingrowns.

I'm kind of scared to try, though.

The only place I seem to respond well to epilating is my inner thighs - I have no idea why. But the skin is soft there and shows no follicular weirdness like my lower legs.

Sorry I have just rambled a ton but - long story short I think some people are just more prone to ingrowns.

About the ingrown hairs: I advise using a bath puff with some body scrub immediately after you epilate. The body scrubs that work best for me contain salicylic acid or some other acne-fighting agent, helping to close the pores. Try Neutrogena body scrub.

Apart from that, it really is up to your pores. My upper lip and underarms respond really well to epilation. My chin/neck area will usually show a few ingrown hairs (in spite of the body scrub), and my chest all but breaks out into a noticeable rash.

About your underarms -- it might be painful the first few times, but it is *definitely* worth it to epilate. I have a lot of dark hair, the type that always seems to be visible under the surface just after shaving. I only have to epilate every few weeks, and in between times the hair is super-fine and not noticeable. I totally love it, my underarms feel girly and smooth all the time now -- no more stubble!

Ladies,
Could you please share the brand of Epilator you use? I really want to invest in one but do not want to purchase a dud.
Thanks!

offshorewife -

I have a braun Silk-epil. Its quite old, I bought it second hand but still works well (its meant to be rechargeable but its not, I have to keep it plugged in to use it). I think if I upgraded I would buy a braun again, an ex-flatmate has a braun and it was just as good - and easier because hers is rechargable.

Enjoi was the best for me. As far as the ingrown hairs, make sure to clean your face first. I use alcohol before and after epilating. Its great. I dont have the shadow from shaving like I use to and maybe one ingrown hair. Also the hair grows back thinner.

I second the PP who said that whether you get ingrown hairs etc is kind of the luck of the draw. I almost never get ingrown hairs when I epilate. I have very pernacious hair and if I go a long time between epilating it is very painful and my bikini line bleeds, but it's still totally worth it for me. I tried my underarm once and got the skin caught and now I'm afraid to try it again, but someday I probably will. I actually have a much worse time with shaving near my bikini line - I get painful red bumps from shaving whereas my hair grows in just fine after I epilate.

I have an Emjoi Optima, btw... It has served me well for almost 5 years, but the last time I used it I had trouble with it - it's not spinning properly. Either the motor is running out or I need to oil the things that spin. I like mine, but if it wears out I might get a rechargable one (this one you have to leave plugged in). My concern with the rechargables is that they can't be quite as powerful, but they might still be ok.

Is there a way to numb the skin before using an epilator?

I'd imagine if you tried to use numbing cream the hairs would be too slippery to pull out.
I found it easier after a couple of glasses of wine one night - thats how I started on my bikini line! lol
Its a lot easier (not so painful) to do it straight after you've had a shower when your skin is warmer.
