I'm 33 and my Estrogen Level is 40 - The Same As a Pre-pubescent or Menopausal Female
My recent bloodwork showed that my estrongen level is at 40.
The levels for a woman of child-bearing age should be between 60 and 400, depending of where she is in her cycle.
My doctor should have gone over it with me at my last doctor's appointment, but she was so distracted by the results of my thyroid scan, that we skipped over the bloodwork. (Showed I had two thyroid nodules, one on each thyroid.)
I only found out by accident when I requested copies of my records.
What could be causing such a low level?
I have to make an appointment to check into this, but in the meantime, I looking for any ideas from others.

I just met with my endocrinologist regarding my thryoid and asked about the low estrogen. She told me to follow up with my regular doctor about it, so it doesn't seem like it has a connection the the thyroid or she would have said something.
What cyclw day was your test? Estrogen levels fluctuate through the month and are very low at the start of a cycle. If your test was done then, then you could easily get a result of 40. Mid-cycle it should peak at 200+ for each egg you've made.

They say that for CD 3 normal is 25-75 pg/ml. Now I took a look at what my lab uses as reference levels (note that I'm from Europe, so your lab may something different but it shouldn't make too much of a difference I assume):
Maybe an American cyster could post her lab references here for you. It seems to me that 40 pg/ml would only be too low if you were supposed to be peaking..?

It gave a table of what the levels should be at each state of a cycle. There were no "normal" stages of the cycle where it was below 60.
In "< 40" section of the table said pre-pubescent and menopausal.

I don't know where I was in my cycle. I wish I had known that it was an important detail so that I would have made a note of it.
After seeing what was on my lab report, I did my own research, and found pretty much the same information. From what I've read, 60 is really the lowest that estrogen levels should be in a child bearing woman. It fluctuates between 60 and 400 depending of where you are in the cycle.
I'm on birth control pills, so I don't think it really should matter where I am in my cycle.
My endocrinologist said I may need to have my pill changed to a different one. She didn't really want to deal with the issue and told me to go back and see my primary doctor.
The pill, or any BCP can throw off that number. I was on Depo, and had a similarly low number, and was told not to worry, it's the hormones keeping my estrogen from spiking, which helps ovulation. (estrogen spiking helps ovulation, which is why people on BCP can have low estrogen)
