Question I'm afraid to take Spiro!

My doctor is recommending Spironolactone for my excess facial hair, but I'm afraid to try it. The side effects include hair loss on scalp, fatigue, cramping, diarrhea and nausea.

Could you please share any good or bad experiences you've had with this med?

Thank you

that's just possible side effects. Like any other drug, everyone reacts differently.

I think some of the side effects relate to if you get too much of the spironolactone. I've been on spiro for almost 5 years, and I love it. The only side effect I noticed when starting the drug was that I had to pee a little more often than normal, because it is a diuretic. I never had any other problems with it. I started on 200 mg per day, and I'm still on that dose.

It has done wonders for my skin, and has helped to slow down the excess hair growth. My doctor also seems to think it has helped my thinning head hair as well.

If you try it there's nothing to say that you can't stop it if you don't feel well on it. Whichever way you should decide... good luck.

I know that other questions like this have been asked before... Maybe try doing a search for Spironolactone or just Spiro, and see what comes up!

I used to take it but had to stop because I started to get my period every 2 weeks !

It did help alot with the hair though. It slowed it's growth which is nice. Besides that when I first started it my boobies hurt for a few days and I kinda felt funky but not too bad.

Istarted off at 25 mgs and slowly moved upto 100 before I stopped it.

Best of luck!

I started on spiro for about a week. My side effects were awful. I felt like i was 2 minutes away from death. Felt totally ill and lethargic.

Then i began to read some articles on how spiro is linked with breast cancer in women...and i stopped taking it right away.

Spiro has been great for me. I'm on 100mg. It has calmed down my facial hair and extra body hair, my skin is great and not oily at all. I really don't mind taking it and I've been on it for 2 years. The main reason I'm taking it is for hair loss on my scalp which hasn't really got better but the spiro helped slow the hair loss.

When I first started taking it, I was also on bcp. It did cause me to have break through bleedings but that stopped after 4 months and then everything was clockwork.

HTH.

I took Sprio for about three weeks. I was nauseated for a couple of weeks and then had severe cramps. I thought I was dying and went to the ER. They told me that the lining of my stomach was inflamed.

The longest I took spiro for was about 10 months. The side effects I experiences were, mood swings, nausea & cramping.

at the time I didn't see any change in my hair growth, but after I stopped taking it, I noticed an increase in growth.

I also took multi vitamins at the time and made sure to drink at least 10 cups of water

Default loss?

I'm on spiro 100 mg and have had a reduction in facial hair, with no change better or worse in head hair. I had dizziness at first but I take at night now to avoid that. I've lost *knocking on wood table* 25 lb and 8 dress sizes on really great AF days since the start and my acne has definitely improved. I never got any stomach-type side effects. But that's just me!

Default hmm

I started exercising intently in Jan, with no weight change, and in May added the spiro. I dropped about 10 lb almost immediately, and another 5 or so by mid July. Then the rest, by Christmas. I had a nasty stomach flu at XMas, too, but that only dropped about 2 lb more.

My doctor told me the other day that he would prescribe spiro for me for my hairgrowth. How exactly does it work?? Does it bind to our excess androgens or lower testerone?

I am kind of nervous to take it.

I've been taking 100 mg twice a day for about a month and have not had one side effect. I was taking a different diuretic with my BP med, so maybe my body was already used to a diuretic. When my gyno recommended Spiro, my family doctor changed my BP med to not include a diurectic. He told me if I watch my sodium intake, I won't have to pee a lot.

Can anyone tell me how much difference it has made in your unwanted hair and how long before you noticed a difference? I've been on Met and the Vaniqa for almost four months and I think I have less hair or it is growing slower, but I still have to pluck, wax & have where women shouldn't have to.

I actually have thicker hair on my head since I've been taking ita nd shortly after starting I got somewhat constipated, but I also started Parlodel at the same time. Now i only take Spiro and have no problems except for some diziness if I stand up too quickly. I think that is because it is a diurhetic and I am actually deyhydrated. My face is much more clear and I think I have less thick hair on my body and my head hair is thicker and I don't retain as much fluid. I don't ever want to stop taking it.

I just started taking spiro about 1 week ago and I have been experiencing a little nausea but nothing like I felt when I first started taking glucophage. I'm really excited about starting this med because of hirsutism. To be honest, I'm not sure of my loss of hair on my head. I have always been told that I have "too much hair for one head". My hair is extremely thick, I have NEVER seen or met anyone with as much hair that I have. Trust me, I never thought that was a good thing..until now I guess. I was never able to control my hair growing up and I was self concious because I could never achieve "flat hair". I say several months back I had a point where I had a tremendous amount of hair loss, but I only knew it from the amount of hair that showed in my hands and comb or brush. Couldn't tell by looking or feeling myhair. I attributed it to improper care (dryness). But now that I read you guys posts, I get worried because I'd rather have too much hair than not enough. It's really scary...sometimes I feel like I'll eventually turn into a man and it brings tears to my eyes. I already have a beard, I have hair on my stomach, chest and breast. It'sawful! My legs are abnormally hairy, all the way up my thighs and I hate it so much!
