Hi all! I'm so happy that I found this website..... I hope someone here will be able to help. I'm 23 years old and have had very irregular periods for about five or six years. I have been on and off the birth control pill. I always got my period when I was on the pill. The problem is now that I've switched insurance companies, they do not cover the majority of brands of birth control pills. One of the few that they approve is mircette. Does anyone have any experience with this pill? I have never really heard of it and would appreciate some feedback.
My gynecologist has said that it is likely that I have PCOS, but since I am not trying to conceive right now, it just doesn't make sense to run all of the tests. So she suggests just staying on the pill until I'm ready to try to conceive. Is this standard procedure? As I've said before, I'm new to this and very overwhelmed.
Another factor is weight. I'm 5 feet and 7 inches. I currently weigh 208 pounds. I've lost about 3.5 pounds in the last 2 weeks from healthy (not overboard) eating and exercise. I plan to continue this and increase positive behaviors as the weeks go on and I become accustomed to the tiny changes that I am gradually making. If I get down to a healthier weight, will my cycle regulate?
I'm sorry that this seems like so many questions. I'm just not really sure where to turn. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi and welcome. I don't know about that particular birth control pill, but there is a birth control thread you may want to post on, they may be able to answer your question there. I'm not trying to conceive now either, and i was on birth control pills for 4 years, until i got blood clots in my legs and a pulmonary embolism from them. After that, i can't take the pill ever again, and had very irregular periods until finally they just stopped altogether a few years ago. The hair loss, weight gain, hair growing everywhere else greatly increased after that. I did have all the labs, ultrasound and all done, and found out i'm insulin resistant and have multiple cysts on both ovaries, plus have increased testosterone levels. A lot of women, including myself feel that bcp's just mask the symptoms of pcos and make it take longer to get diagnosed. You could be insulin resistant, be at risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, etc. I dont mean to scare you at all. I think it would depend on what kind of symptoms you are having to decide if you should seek further treatment and get the full work up. I hope you take some time to read some of the info you can find on this site, and there are lots of supportive women to answer your questions here, good luck!
I basically want to encourage you to go ahead and insist on a diagnoses. Having PCOS is not just a problem that often causes infertility in fact for some women infertility is not an issue. There is a multitude of symptoms within the pcos diagnoses many of which can and should be treated regardless of ttc or not. PCOS women who are not trying to conceive would benefit greatly by a doctor assisting her in having menstrual cycles to prevent late cancer issues that could arise. The testosterone levels and others as well are often very off and meds such as spironolactone for the woman not ttc can reduce signs such as hirisutism (male pattern hair growth) and alopecia (male patten baldness). Metformin or Glucophage known as a diabetic drug can make a world of difference in how you feel daily as it keeps insulin resistence in check reducing the cahnce of developing type 2 diabetes it also helps the pco women lose weight because the insulin gets straightened out. I could go on and on but I do sincerely recommend you insist on a diagnoses and treament. That does not mean you can't or shouldnt go with birth control it also is helpful when not ttc its just that in the long run you will fair so much better by starting treatment now!
