I developed diabetes during my pregnancy. My OB said that it is type 2 since I developed it so early and I was on such large amounts of insulin. I am now 3 weeks postpartum.
I am very motivated to get this weight off and get on a good diet and exercise. I told myself that if I can eat such a strict diet when pregnant and control it, then I can do this! So I made an appointment with my endocrinologist. I told her my plan for diet, exercise, and weight loss. She said that I can do that and my numbers will come down some but the diabetes will never go away. I always thought that you could diet and lose weight enough to where your levels are in the normal range? What she said to me REALLY discouraged me.
I am 3 weeks postpartum and my levels are in the diabetic range but on the lower end. She said that at 6 weeks postpartum they will probably get higher and I will need to go on Byetta and metformin. And that the diet and exercise will lower it some but I will always be diabetic.
I told my midwife today that I am planning on losing weight and she said great that way you might not be diabetic next time you are pregnant. I told her my endo said it will never go away.
Who is right? Can I lose weight to make it go away or to at least make it look like it's gone away?

I have always known that once you have diabetes, you can control it through diet and exercise. However, you will always have the chance of "relapse". Below is a link about developing diabetes during pregnancy.
Here is a link that is helpful when you have been recently diagnosed with Diabetes. From there on the left side is more detailed information about Diabetes 2. This is the ADA page so you should find all the up-to-date information listed.
Ok, so your midwife is assuming you had gd, not type 2, that is why she said 'maybe it wont come back next time'. your endo is right to a point. You will always be a diabetic, but (and this is a big BUT) it can be controlled through diet and excersise. That means a very strict diet, like carb counting etc, and exercising at least 5 days a week. Anything we do can affect are sugars. They are higher when we are sick, they are higher when we have our periods, they are higher when we are stressed.
Right after birth, we get a little 'break' with our diabetes. Our bodies were working so hard during the pg , that once we deliver it is still working but we are not needing as much insulin as we did while pg so that is why it will be lower for about 6-8 weeks, then are bodies get back to normal and we need more insulin.
I would say start monitoring your sugars constantly, especially right now. If you get any high numbers, log them and right down what you ate so that next time you know what to avoid or eat less of.
I was diagnosed with type 2 in 03 and it has been a battle ever since. Even though my a1c's are always 6 or under, I still have highs and I cannot do it with out meds. Currently, I am on insulin and met.
Right after delivery, I was put on met only and six months later started on insulin because the met alone did not do it.
I have even lost around 30 pounds and still need the insulin. So it can be done by some, but you need to work very hard to do it with diet and excercise alone.
