Question I'm ditching the Met....now what?

First off, please know that I do realize there's a "where do I start" thread and I have read it....but I still feel like I need to ask "where do I start?" lol I'm SO confused. Obviously all herbal remedies are not for everyone and there's just so much out there. I know many of you have studied this stuff for a long time, whereas I have no knowledge of herbal remedies.

As a little history, I've been on Gluc XR since Oct '02 and on 2000mg since March '04. As of two weeks ago, my insulin and glucose levels are normal. However, I feel AWFUL. I went off Gluc for 2 wks and felt GREAT. On it I feel fatigued, have back and pelvic pain along with pain in the areas of my gallbladder across my pancreas (along that line, am I being clear?) Off it, I do not have this but my liver and renal function tests are normal. Also, on Met (TMI) but my breasts hurt all the time. I don't know why. My periods have never completely normalized on it although they do come ~ every 45 days whereas normally, she'd never come.

My only real reason for being on the Gluc is in the hopes of Oing and getting pg.

SO.....if you've read this far, THANK YOU! What I need to know is:

a) what do I do about seeing AF every month or so
b) what do I take to help O
c) or is there a blanket set of things that I should take to just normalize everything? I am so confused!

I do know that my LH is high because I can see a + on an opk at any time of the month.

I'd really appreciate any feedback, even if it's just links that I can read. TIA!

Hello Karen

I've been doing a lot of reading lately on the PCOS and weight loss thing and most things that are supposed to help are designed to help you lose weight by picking one of the three things that are supposed to cause weight gain with PCOS; i.e. low progesterone levels (natural progesterone cream/wild yam etc) low thyroid function or insulin resistance.

If your insuline levels are normal could it be your weight problem is related to one of the other factors?

Some of the great info I have found on this forum and used so far are
kelp tablets - help my hair and metabolism/energy levels (supposed to help with thyroid function though not recommended for those on thyroid treatment)

protein - helps me a lot

Chromium GTF - I know that I can eat more carbs to lose weight while I'm taking it

Also there has been a lot of information on Vitamin D to help PCOS lately. I haven't tried it yet but may do in the New Year. If you do a search on this forum I posted a research article on here which looked quite promising.

taurine - helps insulin resistance

NAC - I think there is some information posted by Kat about this in the Research forum

Hope you find something that helps!

P.S. Evening Primrose Oil can really help with sore bbs

Karen,

I have used Natural Progesterone Cream and Vitex. Many women on here have gotten preg from Vitex. I, like you, never have AF at all without the help of something. When I was using the two of these, AF showed on cd 28. I wasn't really TTC, but just trying to get AF. Here is a link to a web site about TTC and NPC.

http://www.infertilityworkshop.com/a.../cleansing.htm

www.webwomb.com has some things about herbs and ttc.

www.mammakath.com (not my fav web site but has some things about herbs.)

www.wholehealthmd.com (click on the reference library and search for the herbs)
These are the only websites that I can think of off the top of my head. My desk top computer, where all my links are saved, is
torn up. If I think of anymore, I will post them.

Black Cohosh is supposed to lower LH levels. Vitex is also called chaste tree berry. If you do a search, you might want to try both names.

Hope this gives you a start. Sorry the info is sooo scattered. I'm in a hurry.

Hi Karen,

I, too, feel like crud on Metformin however I started acupuncture in December and I no longer feel like I'm 68 years instead of 28 I usually just had this "blah" feeling ALL THE TIME, emotionally and physically. Further, I've had really bad dizziness from when I took Prometrium (CD14-26) and it's helping that as well. Acupuncture is working for me, definitely. I know it's not for everyone but in the month I've been going, I've definitely seen results! Yes, it hurts but nothing excruciating. I started on herbs last week, which was around CD22 and I had no ovulated yet. I started the herbs and bam, I got my coverline!

If you're interested, there is a thread that I'm on called "Acupuncture Anyone?" under the Alternative Remedies section. One girl just announced she is pregnant!

Feel free to stop by or private message me - I will help the best I can!
