Default I'm just not sure (mentions pregnancy and possible mc)

On Tuesday, I went to see a midwife for my first prenatal appointment. She figured that I was at about 5 weeks, and gave me a pap to make sure everything's OK. She told me not to be alarmed if I notice any pinkish or redish spotting - that it's normal after a pap.

So when I had some spotting the next morning, I didin't think too much of it. However, by night time, the light, pinkish spotting turned into more like a light period. No cramps, though.

I contacted the nurse on call, and she told me just to take it easy and see if it goes away. At the time, she wasn't concerned about my symptoms. To be safe, I called my mom (who had 7 kids - lots of experience!) to see if she had ever experienced such a thing.

She told me that she bled with every single pregnancy, and that with her first pregnancy, she actually led very heavily and believed that she had miscarried. She didn't though, and I was born.

I took comfort in this knowledge, however, since then, the bright red "light period" has become more like the heavier first couple days of a normal period. At one point this afternoon, I experienced about 10 minutes of cramping - though nothing more than normal menstrual cramping. I've never been through this before, so I really don't know what kind of cramping is considered indicatie of miscarriage. A friend of mine went through it years ago, and he cramping caused her to double over in pain. Mine, I was able to deal with without letting my mother-in-law (who was with me at the time) know that it was happening.

Now, all I can do is wait. The nurse told me that they can't know anything for sure until they do an ultrasound - which they can't do until Wednesday. Until then, I am to stay off my feet and stay home.

I'm wondering if anyone with experience has ever experienced anything like this. Has anyone ever had similar symptoms and still had a viable pregnancy? Or should I not waste my time keeping my hopes up until Wednesday?

Sorry this is so long. I joined this board to share the joy of my PCOS pregnancy. Didn't expect that by the time I'd get around to it, I'd have to post it here.

So sorry you are going through this. Bleeding early in pregnancy is pretty common, especially after an exam. I had it with all my pregnancies. I bled so much with my last pregnancy, I didn't even know I was pregnant, because I thought it was my period. If your cramping gets worse, or you start passing large clots, you may want to go to the hospital and they can do a transvaginal ultrasound to see the baby. I hope everything works out for you ok.

were your hormaone levels high enough to show on a hpt? if so you could always do another one .... also 6days seems along time to wait for an u/s ... can they do a beta or send you to a hospital?
my friend bled like a period for weeks at the beginng and everyhting was fine.
if you are miscarring you may not get any or bad cramps as you are not too far along. but try not to worry... stress is no good .... just rest and think positive.

I found out that I was pregnant because I took an hpt. 2, actually. The box came with three, so I guess I could test again... but would blood mixed with the urine screw anything up?

My nurse didn't want to wait 6 days either, but unfortunately, there are no openings until then. She said that no matter what it is, there's nothing they could do anyway, so I should just relax, keep my feet up, and wait it out.

Thankfully, I'm at peace with whatever happens. My husband and I weren't going to "try". I just went off BC and we'd see what happens for a few months. I thought it'd be a while before getting pregnant but BAM - I got pregnant right away. I'm only 22, so it's not like we don't have time. I'm just happy that I can even get pregnant in the first place.
