Hi everyone,
Thanks so much for this site, I am so very grateful. This is our situation. My 13 year old daughter has been diagnosed with PCOS and she is suffering. She started menstruating at the age of 10, but she had no period for the last year. After going to the dr. for months to find out what was wrong, last week we finally get the diagnosis. Right now she is home from school with severe cramps that she gets every about two weeks. I have started her on some natural treatments to balance her insulin levels, such as diet, cinnamon and sage oil. Of course the dr. recommended bcp, but that is not the route that we are going to take, not right now anyway. Please help with advice, encouragement and prayers(we are christians). Right now I am tired. We are trying to get AF to come on a regular basis. One question: Is it normal for someone with pcos to cramp and not bleed. Also has anyone had success with don quai and vitex(same as fenugreek?) alone. I mean not combined with medications. Hey, Thanks again for this website and for the replies.
My younger sister was 15 when she was diagnosed and she has a lot of the same problems with AF that you are describing. Her doctor gave her a certian type of medication to make her have AF if she did not get it atleast every three months. It wasn't bcp it was somthing else, although we both have been on bcp and while they help with AF they made me quite moody and they aslo helped me gain about 20 lbs. Fortunatly neither one of us has any IR but we do have thyroid problems...
I hope her cramps ease up(does she have a heating pad, that seems to help a little).
Is your daughter insulin resistant? If you don't know, you should definitely pursue testing, because many women with PCOS are.
If so, then Glucophage (metformin) has also been known to stimulate periods.
My gyno put me on Provera because I had been skipping periods frequently. After two rounds of it and the heaviest, most brutal periods I have ever had, I was finally diagnosed as IR by my regular doctor. I said, "I take it you are prescribing Glucophage?" When she said yes, I asked if I could stop taking the Provera after the current cycle, and she readily agreed. She said she would prescribe a natural hormone if I continued to have problems.
Then I got the Insulin Resistance Diet book and scanned the list of meds that could make Insulin Resistance worse. Guess what was on the list? "Synthetic progesterone only birth control pills."
That said, if Glucophage is not an option or if it doesn't help her cycles I would consider provera for a little while. Skipping periods is nothing to mess with. It can lead to retaining your uterine lining, which can lead to cancer! That's why I'm glad I took the Provera for a couple of months anyway.
Blessings,
Di

Just came up on this post and thought that maybe by posting in the teen forum that they could tell you the treatments that they are getting....natural or otherwise.....
Maybe it will help maybe not...I know there are no easy answer when it comes to your child.
Good luck
