Default I'm new--Diagnosis Rant

Here's my story:

In October, I visited my Family Dr (also my gyn) with weight gain & inability to lose, irregular periods, acne, a hairy chin, fatigue, and generally not feeling well. He ordered a ton of blood tests and the only thing that came back abnormal was my testosterone level (high). He called me and said let's try Metformin and never said much else. My husband is also a physician (this guy's partner) and said, oh, PCOS, yeah I can see that. Well, I did a ton of reading and figured I've probably had PCOS for quite some time. I visited the doctor the other day for my 3 month followup. I have lost about 9 pounds, the acne is better, my periods are regular & I just feel better. He said--and I quote--"You don't have PCOS b/c it causes infertility. You do have 3 children don't you." I was stunned into silence. He said I have metabolic disorder. When I regained my composure, I said I thought the difference (or at least one of the differences) b/w metabolic & PCOS is the hormone issues, which I have in spades. He never really answered my question, but ordered a followup testosterone level, which came back in normal limits---almost exactly half of what it was. He did not change my medication or course of treatment, but gave me a dx I certainly don't agree with. My husband insists that I let him get me a new Dr. because this one "has obviously gone senile." (DH's quote.) I'm just afraid it's going to be a sticky situation b/c they work together. I just don't understand why he would say that PCOS means infertility. I know that that is certainly an aspect for many people, but not everybody. I'm still upset, but looking for a new dr. Thanks for listening. Y'all have a great support system here.

I am sorry you are dealing with an incompetent doctor. I have been down that same road. I was told that women didn't need to get a period at all...WTF? Excuse my french, but I still have some anger issues about it to deal with...LOL

I would certainly look into a new doctor as there are tons of cysters who have children, some who are thin, some who are thick, thinning hair, thick hair.....Basically every woman is different and has different symptoms, even with the same disorder.

Did your doctor give you the 2hr glucose tolerance test? Where you drink that sugary liquid? I only ask because if you are IR it can cause weight gain, fur, things like that. You are on Met which is a good thing. Is that working out ok for you?

Welcome again!!!

momo3,
I don't want to bad-mouth gyno's, but my experience is that they just don't know their stuff when it comes to PCOS. Maybe look into an Endocrinologist... and that could be your "excuse" for not seeing wacko Dr again... let him know that since he says you have a metabolic disorder, you'd like to see a specialist. That's what I had to do... cancel my obgyn appt and tell her that I wanted to get more "specialized" even though I wanted to say that she's a crap Dr!!

Good Luck!!!

I have metabolic syndrome, Syndrome X..pre-diabetes...whatever you call it. It is a RESULT of my PCOS per my endo doctor.

After losing 50 pounds, being on met/avandia and eating healthier (but not tonight, going to pig out on Chinese food which is my motto tonight...good food and some wine I bought myself)....my blood chart is so good my endo is happy...and he is a SGT. endo...he had me in tears before when I gained weight.

Your doctor has it only HALF right. Moron.

I'm glad you are going to see a different doctor. I definitely have PCOS and I have 3 kids! My blood tests were normal. I was finally put on met by my family doctor (I'd seen gyn's and endo's with no luck). I currently take 1500 mg/day, it really seems to help me!
Good luck, I hope you find the help you need.
Jenny
