I was just diagnosed "severely" hypothyroid this past week. As far as I know, I did not have this problem prior to the birth of my daughter. I had gone back to my RE for bloodwork, hoping to get him to put me back on Metformin, and he found this thyroid problem as well.
I just have to say, I'm amazed after only a few days on Levothyroxin 50mcg. I guess I had just gotten used to feeling bad, if that makes any sense. I feel totally different. I kept chalking up the fact that I was so exhausted all the time to the fact that my birth experience was so traumatic, but in the back of my mind I'm thinking, "geez, it's been almost 8 months now."
I feel so relieved and grateful that this problem was found!! It really has changed my life already.
God Bless,
Julie

4th Round 150mg - Wish me luck!
JFK - I had a similar experience. I had just gotten used to feeling bad, and thought that was normal. In fact, when people ask me now how the fatigue was in my first trimester, my response is that it was NOTHING compared to the fatigue I had for years when I was undiagnosed.
The strange thing is, since I've been pregnant, I don't need synthroid at all. I went really hyper on my previous dosage, and then I haven't been able to get a low enough dose to keep me from going hyper. Pregnancy does strange things to a body.
I'm glad to hear that you're feeling better, and that you got a diagnosis!! And, I concur, your daughter is a real cutie pie.

Erica -- Congratulations on your pregnancy!! That's really interesting how your thyroid levels have been affected by pregnancy. That's a good thing for me to keep in mind when we start TTC#2.
I go in this week for bloodwork to see how my current dosage of Synthroid is working. Anyone know if I'm supposed to take my pill the morning I get my bloodwork done, like I normally do? I know I have to fast, but not sure if I'm supposed to take the Synthroid in the morning!
God Bless!

hmmm ... I just assumed it was fasting, only because the first BW he did was fasting. But that was not just for thyroid levels, that was for a bunch of stuff. I guess I really need to call the nurse and find out the exact instructions. Thanks for your input, Erica!
God Bless,
Julie

It depends on what time of day you test. If you test early in the AM, skip your pill until just after the test. If you are tested later on in the day, go ahead and take your pill first.
This is just because sometimes the hormone peaks a little high in your blood when it is digested but disperses afterwards, and you don't want to be tested during the peak. If you take T4 only, skipping meds until after the test is not going to affect your test results much if at all, so that's usually what most ppl do.

I ended up having my bloodwork drawn around 3pm yesterday, so hopefully that should give a good picture of what's going on, since that's a good 9 hours from when I took the pill. I just KNOW I need a higher dosage. I'll let you know what the doctor says when I see him next Wednesday!
God Bless!

hi ladies,
some of you know me from the mommy posts, julie and shena i hope you remember me
anyways i too was recently diagosned with hypothyrodism, i think i spelt that right...anyways the doctor currently put me on 0.1 mg but i havent really felt too much of a difference, i have been on that for 1 week.
my question is how long do you need to be on Synthyroid before it takes it full effect?? i hate feeling tired and pain in my joints all the time, i cant wait till i am back to feeling almost 100% again.
I've been on 25mcg Synthroid for a few days...it's hard to tell if it's helping.
I'm not 'officially' hypothyroid (TSH results in supposed normal range) but I sure have a ton of symptoms of it. In particular my depression and anxiety has hit the roof the past couple weeks. The past couple days I have definitely felt different, and I wonder if it's from the Synthroid. I'm definitely not as bad, not great, but better....
I'm asking my pdoc tomorrow about adding a small amount of Cytomel, as I've heard that a combo might be best.
My doctor told me I didn't have to fast for blood tests concerning thyroid, and just to get them done at least a couple hours after taking the Synthroid...
SO glad you're feeling better JFK!
Marit

Hi Amber! I'm glad to hear that you got your hypothyroid diagnosed. For me, the change in how I felt was almost instant, but they also started me at a higher dosage - 50mcg. And I could start to tell I needed even more than that within a few days of starting it. I'm now up to 75mcg, and due for another blood test next week. I encourage you to let your doctor know how you're feeling. That seems like a really low dose they started you off on.
Hope you feel better soon! Gotta run ... Hannah's up from her nap!

hi julie
yeh i thought 0.1 mg is low too as i havent felt any difference yet, i am still feeling tired, irritable and my joints are killing me, so i am going to make an appt to see the doctor this week.
glad to see you are feeling better too on the meds.
my question is how long do you need to be on Synthyroid before it takes it full effect??
I never felt good on Synthroid - - i lost half my hair as well.
Many people do not convert T4 to T3 (i hope I am saying that right - i'm not an expert by any means) and need to either add a drug like Cytomel (which is T3) or switch to a drug like Armour (which has both and then some).
the about.com thyroid forum has a lot of info. if you're interested in further help. I"m still too new at this to know much.
