hey, i'm 22 years old and was just diagnosed with a "mild" case of PCOS. my doctor doesn't seem too concerned overall, and says my chances of infertility are slim.
she did a pelvic exam, i did blood tests, and had a transvaginal ultrasound. i only have a few small ovarian cysts, but my testosterone and androgen levels are twice what they should be, i gain weight as easily as sneezing, and my periods have been messed up for the last two years. i just had one for an entire month, after not having any for five months.
sooo... yeah. i'm confused on the fact that it's mild- does this mean it will get worse? my doctor didn't give me a satisfactory answer on that...
anyway, hi to everyone, and i hope i'll get some much needed info on these boards! from what i can tell after skimming for a few minutes, this place seems really great for support/information.
Welcome Kate! I was recently diagnosed with PCOS... apparently a "mild" case too. What I'm assuming (and hoping) is that with proper treatment of it that symptoms won't progress further and it will only get better from here on out. If you ever need someone to talk to let me know!

i am SO hoping you're right! i'm definitely trying to get the symptoms in check (losing weight, mostly)- my dr won't put me on the pill just yet because i have borderline high blood pressure (124/90), so i'm also working on that. hopefully that will help a lot...
I guess I have a "mild" case too... I have testosterone on the high end of normal, infrequent periods (when not on BCP), some excess body hair, and cysts, but no weight problem. Unlike you my Dr DID suggest that I might need specialist help to conceive.
I also worry that it will get worse as I get older (I'm 24). I think it CAN do but hopefully, now we have a diagnosis, we can take preventive measures, like a healthy diet and such, and if there are problems we can get help quicker. For example if you try to have a baby and it doesn't happen you will go looking for medical help quicker than if you had no idea anything was wrong.
By the way, I like your screen name, I loved that book when I was a kid!
Alex
Your case of PCOS doesn't sound 'mild' to me, but I'm no doctor.
Yes, PCOS can get worse. It seems to hinge on your lifestyle, especially diet and exercise, as well as stress and other factors.
The good thing is that you CAN do stuff about it. Check out an exercise program and an IR diet. Look around the boards. Lots of cysters also take supplements, Metformin, etc. Find a knowledgeable doctor and prepare a plan of attack!
See you around!

alex- it was a great book, i remember being very caught up in it.
one hit wonder- that's a GREAT jean chretien quote!
thanks for the advice/welcome/support, everyone. it helps to know that there are other people dealing with this- i'm still trying to find out as much information as possible about PCOS, seeing as how i'd never heard of it even a few months ago. *hugs*
Hey Kate! My name is Kate too . I've never heard of PCOS being "mild," anyhow it sounds like you probably found out in time to get the proper meds so that it doesn't progress. Good luck!
