I have been tested for IR several times, most recently in May 2002 while TTCing. I gave birth to twins in March 2003 and cannot seem to lose any weight at all. It's the first time in my life that I've had this problem. My first question is this, could I have developed IR during/after this pg?
Second, if I am not IR, would I still benefit from taking gluc/met. The RE I was seeing while TTCing didn't RX it unless you were IR. I became pg on injectibles alone. But lately I've been reading that it could help me anyway with various PCOS symptoms like weight loss and ammenorrhea. Is that true? Is there any harm in taking it if you aren't IR proven by a test? If I start, will I have to take it forever?
Finally, I am still nursing my twins (almost 10mos) with no plans to wean anytime soon. I've seen that many take gluc while nursing but that some are hesitant. If anyone knows the pros/cons and could share that, I'd also be interested in that info.
Thanks a lot!

Oops, I should add, I am not TTCing and we are not planning on having any more children. So I would not be taking met/gluc to get my cycle regular to TTC. I just have no cycle at all. That could be due to the nursing, but even when not nursing, I have about 2 cycles per year with no rhyme or reason to them.
And would a family dr be able to help me with this? We've moved since I was TTCing the twins and I do not currently have an RE or know if there are any in this area. It's a very small town and I just use a family dr for basic checkups.
Thanks!

Although met is generally given to IR ladies, new studies are showing some really promising results for ladies who are not showing IR. There is articles on this topic on the FAQ thread if you'd like to read them:
There are also several amazing articles on that thread on nursing/metformin...latest info is showing met is within safe levels in breastmilk.
Hope that info helps!

I'm not IR either and have been taking met since mid-October. In December I had my first "normal" AF. Even if you are not IR, met may benefit you by getting your hormones/metabolism/whatever in line. And even if you don't need a normal cycle as you arent ttc, you still need several AF's/ yearly to help prevent endometrial hyperplasia. My GP wouldn't prescribe it as she didn't know enough about met and PCOS, but if your gp will, thats great! Good luck!
