I've been suffering with hair loss (by far my worst symptom) for 3 years now. It's been a horrific rollercoaster of emotions, that I don't think anyone else can grasp unless they have experienced it for themselves.
Melanie, you're already on medications that are supposed to help remedy the hair situation. So I'm gonna suggest you take a different approach, that probably will improve your hair loss. How is your diet? and do you currently exercise? These are the 2 things that you can control and have power over.
I'm assuming you already know the benefits of a lower carb diet for us PCOS'ers. Be honest with yourself, how well are you sticking to it? Is there room for improvement? During my worst hair loss days (300 hairs/day!!), I hopelessly reached for carbs to soothe my pain. I was hurting myself even more, but I was too depressed to realize it at the time.
Do you have an exercise regimen? If not, I can't stress enough how important it is to begin one. It will improve not only your stress levels, but also help your body become healthier which in turn will help to improve your pcos symptoms.
Personally, only since I've added in a minimum of 5 hours of exercise a week, have I experienced a reduction (losing only 15-50/day now) in hair loss and some regrowth. Low carbing and Met alone didn't really do anything for me. Another cyster, Sarah, who is also in the run challange is experiencing the same success in reduction. There is nothing more empowering, then seeing your body change for the positive AND your PCOS symptoms improve as a result of some butt kicking workouts.
I've been where you are now and I do know how hard it is to go through this. Sadly doctor's don't have many answers when it comes to woman's hair loss and our options are very few and far in between. The best thing you can do, is to arm yourself with ALL the weapons to fight PCOS and it's horrid symptoms. I only wish what I know now, I had known three years ago. The state of my hair still depresses me, but at least now I have hope that it might get better with time - if I continue to work for it.
HTH
