Default I'm so confused ...

Hi to anyone reading this ... I only discovered this site by accident when I was googling my questions about SPIRONOLACTONE and METMORFIN.

The reason for this is because I had just seen my PCP last Saturday who had checked up on my progress with my LapBand. Its been a year and a half since I had the proceedure done and all I lost for it was 35 pounds. 35 POUNDS! I'm barely eating food because I can't really eat a lot now and have exercised an hour a day for at least 4 times a week.

The first thing my PCP asked me was if I had PCOS. I said, YES. I've been diagnosed for almost 5 years now. His next question was, WHAT MEDICATION HAS MY OB/GYNO PUT ME ON. I said the only thing she keeps telling me is to continue my BCP. That THAT is the only thing I could do.

He then told me about METFORMIN and the benefits of it helping my PCOS and the good effect of weight loss.

I then started my research about it and, actually, thanks to this website, discovered that I could take METFORMIN (for the weight loss) and SPIRONOLACTONE (for the hair problem : loss of scalp hair and excessive hair growth above the lip and chin.) and BCP all together.

I'm still a little confused and sad as to why my gyn doc NEVER discussed these medications with me and now, while reading some of the user's blogs, have seen that a lot of you HAVE actually lost weight.

I feel that weightloss for me due to my PCOS is like a fantasy and am hoping someone else out there can tell me that besides eating right and excercising ... these meds WILL actually help me in my weight loss.

I also don't feel quite so alone anymore with my problem. I don't want to be this heavy (I still have about 70 lbs more to lose) because I want to feel and look good and more importantly, get my PCOS under control.

I'm also going to have my usual 6 month follow up visit with my gyn doc next week and will sit down with her about treating my weight gain and retention due to my PCOS as agressively as I possibly can.

Wish me luck.

Hi, I was put on metformin as the first step in my PCOS and I have to admit it did help me lose weight but you have to work at it with it. I kinda just sat there for a while an though the pounds would just fall off. They did at first but thats cause the pills made me sick. But after about 2 weeks of that its all clear sailing from there. Hope this helped.

Well...metformin is NOT a weight loss drug, and there are now new theories on who should take it, and who shouldn't.

I know that there are many threads on 'metformin and weight loss', but stick with the research FIRST, and have a discussion with your doctor:

Spiro isn't the only option for hair issues:

How Do Flutamide, Spironolactone/Aldactone work (or not work) to reduce hirsutism?

But back to weight...

Come on over to Fit Cysters! The women with PCOS there are losing weight. We just started a new bootcamp, and the registration closes this saturday.

Here's more info: PCOS BOOTCAMP @ FitCysters.com - Next one starts in 2 weeks!

Default I'm confused too...

I'm glad you finally found something that can possibly help you, and that you found this site as a wonderful support group. I hope I don't annoy anyone by writing this, but my fear is that I am going to lose weight. I am not overweight and I don't have any real symptoms of PCOS aside from irregular periods. I started Metmorfin this week because I've tried for almost a year to get pregnant. The medication is getting me sick, but I cut it in half and take one half in the afternoon and the other in the evening, which is helping a little. However, all the research I've done has led me to believe this pill - if not used for diabetics - is being used for weight issues. Has anyone heard of this pill being used for someone that is not overweight? I truly question my doctor's genuine concern for me, so I feel it's in my best interest to research this further.

Please advise. Thank you very much.

Thank you, Ladies, for responding back to me. I feel for you Wanabebe, about your doctors geniune concern for your PCOS and I'm really glad that you're not suffering from weight issues like some of us. I wish that was my problem too ... but unfortunately, I have 60 lbs to lose and I'm doing everything right. I have been exercising and eating much less but my body refuses to let go of my pounds. I know its an internal problem now that needs addressing and I feel angry, upset, confused and down right pissed that my doctor, who diagnosed me 5 years ago with PCOS, DIDNT even mention treatment programs with me besides taking my pills (BCP). I wish she told me about metformin to see if that will help not only my PCOS problem but my weight problem too. Maybe I didnt need to have the Lap band procedure done if I was in Metformin because I was never a big eater. My skinniest friends could out eat me and on a scale of 1 to 10 for eating sweets, I'm on the low 2 or 3. I'm not a sweet food eater so I was also so confused about my sudden weight gain and the fact that no matter what I did ... the pounds refused to budge.

I actually have my appointment with my ob/gyn tomorrow and I'm not leaving that office until I get my answers and until she gives me the prescriptions.

Wish my luck.

I also wish all the luck to all the Cysters out there. NO ONE really knows or understands until you're in the same boat.

Once again, thanks to all of you who took the time to respond and I'm wishing all the luck and blessings to all of you.
